Patrick Wolf Unveils New Album “Crying the Neck” and Releases Single “Dies Irae”

Patrick Wolf’s New Album Announcement

Patrick Wolf has unveiled his seventh studio album titled “Crying the Neck,” accompanied by the release of his new single “Dies Irae.”

Album Details and Themes

This album marks Wolf’s first release in thirteen years and features collaborations with ash Jesus, Serafina Eye, drummer Seb Rochford, and his sister Joe Joe. It serves as the initial installment in a planned series of four albums.

“Dies Irae,” translated from Latin as “Day of Anger,” delves into themes of mortality and familial love. Wolf expresses, “I aimed to craft a response to this notion, viewing it as a testament to life in its final moments, understanding that you may lose someone dear. It’s a bold, almost defiant choice to use remaining time to deepen love or joy with one another.” He shares that he completed the lyrics during an imagined final conversation with his mother, set in her art studio and garden at dusk.

Musical Inspirations and Tour Dates

“Crying the Neck” was written and recorded in Ramsgate, Kent, drawing upon local folklore, the distinctive Kentish landscape, and Wolf’s personal journey. The album is entirely composed, produced, arranged, and written by Wolf, with Brendan Cox contributing as a co-producer and engineer during the final three years of the project.

The album showcases Wolf’s return to the instruments he used in his early career, including the viola, Appalachian dulcimer, baritone ukulele, kantale, and Atari. The thirteen tracks feature “Deculver,” a piece Wolf began composing at 16, alongside new songs inspired by the landscape and folklore of Kent.
