Odesza Releases Eight-Hour “Northern” Mix: “We’re Huge Fans” of ‘Music to Clarify’

Odesza Releases Unique Soundtrack

Odesza shared an eight-hour “music to improve,” inspired by Apple TV+’s Exit. Check this out below.

About the Series

Created by Dan Erickson and produced by Ben Stiller, the series set in the fictional Lumon corporation follows Mark Scout (Adam Scott) and his colleagues, who undergo an “output” procedure that separates their work and personal memories, leaving them unaware of their lives outside of Lumon.

After a three-year hiatus, the second season of the show premiered on Apple TV+ last month, featuring Odesza, the duo of Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight.

Mills and Knight transformed the series into a 23-minute mix, with the aim to create an eight-hour soundtrack to mirror the length of a typical workday.

“We wanted to take people on a journey and provide a wider array of music, playing with Teddy’s narrative in a distinctive manner,” Mills stated in a recent interview with Billboard. “We incorporated different chords into many of its melodies while striving to preserve the show’s unsettling and subversive atmosphere—a dark undercurrent that remains hidden.”

The mix features recognizable chords and piano motifs intertwined with other sounds, reflecting the experiences of the workers. Mills explained that he aimed to lull listeners into a “false sense of safety” with cheerful sounds before introducing darker elements. “It’s a beautiful melancholy,” he said. “There’s sadness, but also joy on the surface. We experimented with expansive chords while weaving in bizarre, dissonant sounds that creep in.”

Reception of the Show

The final episode of Exit aired on Friday (February 28) and was met with enthusiastic acclaim, with some calling it a “masterpiece.”

The second season garnered a five-star review from NME, with James Mottram stating: “As the plot thickens, Exit is a show best enjoyed with a high level of alertness.”

“For example, graffiti in the background reads, ‘Who is alive?’ By the time the Stone Roses’ ‘Love Spreads’ plays, the soundtrack is phenomenal, accompanied by Ian Brown’s lines, ‘Let me put you on the picture / let me show you what I mean.’ The audience is left wanting more from the Exit team. Embrace the journey and allow this unique show to tease and stimulate your mind until the very end.”
