Event Details

This summer, the film “Nostalgic Rock,” now in its second season, will feature the groups performing together at the Musical Theater Alpine Valley in East-Three, Wisconsin. The event is scheduled for July 18 to 19.

This concert marks the 25th anniversary of Creed’s performance there in 2000, and 18 years have passed since Nickelback made their debut at the venue in 2007. It will also be the first time these two groups have shared the stage since 1999.

Reflections from Nickelback

Last year, Nickelback’s bassist Mike Kroger mentioned that the group’s early backlash served as a “training ground for cyber resilience.”

00s rock bands often faced immense criticism, with many music fans vocally expressing their dislike for the group.

Kroger, brother of frontman Chad Kroger, discussed this phenomenon with NME earlier this year, reflecting on the years of treatment they endured. He stated, “What we’ve come to realize is that the term ‘hatred’ is often overstated because it doesn’t truly affect people.”

“If Nickelback is your biggest annoyance, then you are living a charmed life. No one is trying to harm you, and you’re not starving. If our band is where your hatred is directed, boy, you live in a fairy tale!”

The bassist further elaborated, saying that the backlash they received was a precursor to what we now witness in modern digital interactions. Speaking on Reduced podcast, he asserted, “It was a testing ground for cyber-bullying. Everyone learned how to target people online, making us the patient zero of social media backlash. It sucks, but it was the trial run for what was to come.”

“I understand that music impacts people deeply. However, it also highlights a flaw in human nature: we prefer discussing what we dislike over what we appreciate; humanity truly has a reliance on negativity,” he added.

In another comment last year, Chad Kroger stated that he believes their band faces less hatred now, describing it as a “softening” effect.

Meanwhile, Mark Tremonti from Creed commented on his band’s reputation, expressing a preference for selling tons of records and compelling people to attend their shows, rather than facing the alternative.

The band from Tallahassee, Florida, emerged as part of the post-grunge movement of the late 90s and became well-known for hits like “With Arms Wide Open” and “My Sacrifice.”

While they achieved commercial success with over 20 million records sold, they have long faced critical disdain, often dismissed by certain audiences — Rolling Stone even labeled them as the worst band of the 1990s in 2013.

In an interview with Ultimate Guitar, guitarist Tremonti shared his thoughts on the critical status of the group and how he balances it with their immense success.

“After a while, you come to understand that if you are part of a band as big as Creed, some will love you and some will hate you,” he noted.

“Look at all the biggest bands in the world, especially pop artists. If they become a household name, there will always be those who dislike them. You need to navigate that negativity. Would you rather sell tons of records and have people show up or barely sell any and have everyone love you?” he queried. “I’ve experienced both perspectives; when we started Alter Bridge, we garnered substantial critical acclaim, though we didn’t sell millions like Creed did, so I know what both sides feel like.”

In April, the band reunited for their first show in 12 years during the Summer 99 cruise commemorating Tremonti’s 50th birthday. They continued with a North American reunion tour later that summer, covering 40 cities across the continent.

Frontman Scott Stapp also expressed hope in January that Creed would create new material.
