Neil Young’s Rare Performance
Neil Young shared a video of himself performing “Silver and Gold” for the first time in almost 20 years.
Background of the Song
The track was released in 2000 on his self-titled album but was originally written in 1981. Since then, it has been rarely performed live, with the last rendition taking place in 2007.
Following the release of “Silver and Gold” in 2000, Young discussed the songwriting process in an interview with KSSR Radio. “I tried it several ways. And it was such a sweet, just such a song, you know. It just kind of lives with the guitar. It’s just there,” he stated.
He went on to share, “I actually recorded it a total of 11 times with different people in many different configurations. And we have them all; not one of them is worth attention. But this one finally went back to basics, and I just sat down with my guitar, played it, and said, ‘That’s it.’ Because I love this song, I feel it now, and now it means something to me.”
In the video, posted yesterday (December 25), Young plays the guitar and sings softly while sitting by a fire. As it concludes, he can be heard saying, “Is this our first fireside meeting?”
