Music AI secures funding

Music AI, the AI-first company behind the increasingly popular Moises music creation platform, has announced that it has secured US$40 million in its Series A funding round.

The round was led by Connect Ventures—an investment partnership between the entertainment and sports agency SAA and the venture capital firm New Corporate Partners (NEA)—along with contributions from Brazilian investor Nuns.

Other participants included Kickstart, Samsung Next, Toba Capital, Valutia, and Pelion. Notable figures from the music industry such as Freddy Wexler, 3LAU, and Alexander23 also took part. The Series A round comprised a $30 million primary round and a $10 million minor round.

Growth of the Moises platform

In a statement on Wednesday, Music AI announced that its consumer-facing platform, Moises, now boasts 50 million registered users globally—an impressive 66% increase from the 30 million users reported in April 2023. The Apple App Store has recognized Moises as the iPad App of the Year in 2024.

Including this latest investment, Music AI has raised a total of $50.2 million across three funding rounds, with Monashee as the lead investor following a $8.6 million seed round in 2022.

“Our Series A funding validates the significant impact our technology is making within the creative industry,” stated Music AI CEO Geraldo Ramos.

“We are dedicated to advancing our mission of making music innovation accessible to everyone and look forward to exploring new opportunities with a focus on practical applications.”

In a statement to BIE, Ramos elaborated that the company intends to “sustain a steady pace of innovation, allowing us to create tools that enhance and broaden human creativity.”

Focus on ethical AI solutions

Unlike several other generative AI technology companies, Music AI prides itself on providing “ethical AI solutions that are meticulously designed for fully licensed content, empowering creators while ensuring they receive fair compensation.”

“We are fervently committed to partnering with ethical AI enterprises that appropriately reward and compensate creators for the use of their work,” stated Michael Blank, Managing Partner at Connect Ventures.

“Music AI’s focus on talent and innovative technology positions it as the trusted and leading AI platform in the music sector. By empowering artists, Moises expands the creative process for musicians, producers, and content creators worldwide, enabling them to practice, create, and collaborate.”

“Our Series A funding underscores the real impact our technology is having on the creative industry.”

Launched in 2019 under the name Moises, Music AI has now evolved to incorporate business-to-business. Their Music.ai platform and business consumer Moises.ai platform.

They provide various music information retrieval (MIR) tools such as stem splitting, chord recognition, key and beat detection, and music transcription. As of 2023, the company has introduced generative AI tools, including singing voice modeling, allowing artists to license and sell their voices while also assisting in music creation.

Ramos informed MBW that new products will be launched in the first quarter, including generative systems for collaborative music creation.

“Our model allows users to start, for instance, with a guitar and vocal input, and then add other instruments like drums, bass, and more,” Ramos explained.

“Additionally, we are planning to introduce real-time stem separation for on-device processing, accessible through Moises Live, as well as embedded solutions for other businesses launching in the first quarter.”

Eric Acher, co-founder and managing partner of Monashee, highlighted the Brazilian origins of Music AI’s founders.

“Latin America is a creative hub, and we are excited to collaborate with Brazilian founders to establish a global company at the forefront of a new era driven by artificial intelligence,” Acher shared in a statement.

“We are deeply committed to partnering with ethical AI companies that ensure creators are properly rewarded for their work.”

Carlos Castellanos, an investor at Samsung Next, added: “Music AI’s commitment to bringing artificial intelligence directly to devices aligns with the future of embedded technology, enabling models to operate directly on hardware for enhanced performance, improved privacy, and reduced cloud dependency.

“Their proprietary designs, third-party integrations, and on-device AI capabilities offer reliability, security, and scalability across smartphones, smart TVs, and other connected devices, while enhancing the end-user experience with innovative features.”

Music AI’s recent funding round follows a new partnership with the California-based content identification service, Sound Magic, to jointly offer film and television companies a tool for audio track separation and music identification.

The company also recently collaborated with an entertainment industry platform, SourceAudio, to provide stem separation technology to SourceAudio’s 567,000 users, including more than 140 broadcasters.

In May 2024, the B2B platform Music.ai merged with a cloud computing platform, Vultr, to hasten AI training in North America.
