Details of the Court Proceedings

The rapper received the order after holding back tears in court during a live videoconference, expressing her fear of being shot again if Lanez is released from prison.

In 2022, Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the July 2020 incident in which Megan was shot in the leg as she left a party at Kylie Jenner’s house.

Recently, Megan claimed that Lanez had been molesting her from prison through third-party surrogates. The petition alleged that prison call logs from the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi show that Lanez coordinated attacks on her reputation.

While speaking in a Los Angeles court, she mentioned that she “hasn’t felt at peace since I was shot” and is “just tired of being harassed” (via Billboard).

She elaborated: “It just feels like I have to relive it every day. The man who shot me will not let me forget about it. I’m afraid that when he gets out of prison, he’ll still be mad at me… I feel like maybe he’ll shoot me again, and maybe this time I won’t survive.”

Judge’s Ruling and Legal Arguments

Judge Richard Bloom issued a civil restraining order preventing Lanez from engaging in any offensive behavior for the next five years.

In his ruling, he noted that Megan had demonstrated a “credible threat of violence” and other offenses that “seriously harass the applicant and serve no legitimate purpose.” The order prohibits a broad range of activities, including any form of contact or harassment.

He mentioned: “We had a shooting… and such a brutal act creates a ripple effect that continues. In some cases, it may be a small ripple that fades over time, and in other cases, it may be a ripple that grows over time. Ms. Peet’s testimony seems to make it clear that the ripple effect here was significant.”

The court also heard arguments from Lanez’s lawyer, Michael Hayden, who claimed his client “did not threaten the plaintiff in any way.” He argued that Megan was merely upset by criticisms from online bloggers with “independent opinions,” warning that such a restraining order would infringe upon the First Amendment rights.

Megan refuted this claim, stating she wasn’t trying to limit anyone’s freedom of speech but aimed to prevent Lanez from orchestrating a campaign of harmful harassment from behind bars.

“I understand that being a public figure means hearing a lot of people from all over the world talk about you,” she told the judge. “The problem I have is that the person who shot me is organizing other people and paying people… to spread lies and slander me.”

Lanez was previously found guilty of all three charges: one count of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, one count of carrying a concealed, loaded, and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and one count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He maintained his innocence while incarcerated and was given the opportunity to appeal the decision last July.
