The Wanted’s Max George’s Health Update
The Wanted's Max George has provided a health update following his emergency room visit due to heart issues last week.
The singer disclosed on Friday (December 13) that he was hospitalized after some tests showed he had “problems” with his heart. He shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed, giving a thumbs up, and explained that he was admitted after feeling “really unwell” and undergoing some tests.
Now, he has informed fans that he might need to undergo open-heart surgery and may spend Christmas in the hospital.
Potential Heart Surgery
In a recent Instagram Stories post, the 36-year-old singer revealed that he may require a pacemaker to address an issue with his “lower heart.”
“I have a problem with the lower part of my heart, it's called a block… until I do more tests, we don't know what caused it,” he explained (via Star), ruling out alcohol as a potential factor. “We cut out some things, like alcohol: I haven’t had a drink for four and a half years. So that's not the point. It’s a bit of a mystery actually; the hardest part is the waiting.”
He later shared that the experience has been “hard,” noting he had “a really, really low heart rate that (the hospital) monitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” He added: “Unfortunately, it’s just one of those things. Whatever I have, I just need to keep doing it. I hope the pacemaker is effective; we can do a good job with it.”
Support from Fans and Friends
The update follows his mother informing fans that he was being “really well looked after,” and the singer’s surprise at learning about his heart problems.
“Although this is a huge shock and no doubt a setback, I will give it my best shot! I consider myself very lucky that it was discovered in time,” he expressed last week. “I apologize if I’ve bored you with news in the coming weeks… I’ve probably been in bed for a month and haven’t had much to do!”
After the announcement, bandmate Siva Kaneswaran expressed his support in the comments, saying, “Here it is for you, brother. Rest and get well soon.” More supportive messages came from TV presenter and former JLS singer Marvin Humes: “I'm sorry to hear you're not a very healthy old man… you're strong and you'll fight to the end… much love mate.”
The Wanted gained fame in early 2010 and are well-known for their chart-topping hit “Glad You Came.” They announced a hiatus in 2014, returning in 2022 as a duo consisting of George and Kaneswaran.
In March that year, bandmate Tom Parker passed away at the age of 33 after battling brain cancer.
