Matt Goss Reveals He’s ‘Completely Alienated’ from Brother and Fellow Bros Bandmate Luke

Matt Goss Addresses Estrangement

Matt Goss has disclosed that he is now “completely estranged” from his twin brother and former Bros bandmate Luke.

The ’80s pop duo was the focus of a 2018 BBC documentary, Brothers: After the Screaming Stopped, which unexpectedly became a TV Christmas hit that year, generating numerous memes.

Reflection on Their Reunion

The documentary provided an inside look at Bros’ 2017 reunion and their return to the stage for two shows at The O2 in London. Since that time, the pair have managed to perform together live only twice, in 2019.

NME described the film as “part Spinal Tap, part The Office, part Alan Partridge (and even a little sharp in places).” The review further noted: “At the heart of the film are the two brothers themselves, Matt and Luke Goss, former (and often current) warring factions who spend much of the film trying to prevent falling out as a huge reunion show approaches at London’s The O2. What’s most brilliant, however, are the quotes the pair put forward: half philosophical, half complete nonsense, but 100 percent entertaining.”

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Matt was asked about his relationship with Luke now. “I don’t want to go into details, but I don’t want to lie anymore. We are completely alienated from each other,” he responded.

The singer, gearing up for a solo UK tour in March, expressed, “When you do your best, that’s enough. And I did everything I could. I really have.”

“Listen, I want to be on stage with him, I want to tour with the band, I want to have a pint, I want him to meet my girl, I want to meet his. I want to live with him. But I’m not going to hurt myself. I don’t.

When asked about the cause of the tension, Matt replied, “It’s a tough question. I don’t want to say too much out of respect for him. But I’m not going to say it’s kumbaya, because it’s definitely not.”

However, the singer affirmed that he still “loves Luke, yeah.” He added, “But I can’t comment on that on the record. I don’t want to put myself in danger. This is not a rehearsal.”

“We have a limited amount of time on this Earth, and I want to be around people who really love me, and I want to be around people that I really love. And it should be a mutual experience.”

Reflecting on life’s challenges, Matt shared: “I have a tattoo that says, ‘Never waste a good misery.’ I had two options. Either you let him control you, or you control him. Pain. Agony. You literally have two options.”

Matt released his fifth and final solo album, The Beautiful Unknown, in 2022. Luke has also pursued a career as an actor and director.

In a 2021 conversation with NME, Matt indicated that he had a good relationship with his twin at that time. “I also realized that – other than Luke, who I talk to every day – I don’t have a supportive family,” he reflected back then.

He even hinted at a possible future film project for the duo. “Me and my brother Luke would love a biopic, but it wouldn’t be a Brothers movie – it would have to be a hybrid of both of our life stories, because at one point we didn’t think we’d ever get back together,” he told NME.

“We couldn’t find a common language. We were delighted to play at Wembley (in 1989) as the youngest guys to headline the stadium. But those two evenings we had at the O2 (in 2017) were extraordinary and we learned so much about each other.”

Matt concluded, “We have tempers together and push each other, but we’ve learned that even if we have a tense argument, our love for each other is so much stronger.”

Bros, formed in 1986, is well-known for their 1987 hit “When Will I Be Famous?” which peaked at number two in the UK. In 1988, they reached number one in the UK with “I Owe You Nothing” and hit the top ten eight times (via Official Charts).
