Matt Bernings from National Unveils Intimate Solo Exhibitions Across the UK and Launches Q&A Competitions

Matt Berninger Announces Solo Exhibitions in the UK

Matt Berninger has revealed a series of intimate solo exhibitions in the UK along with Q&A events scheduled for this spring.

Performances and New Music

The National frontman will showcase three curated exhibitions in collaboration with producer Sean O’Brien and Julia Laws (Ronboy). These exhibitions align with his upcoming album “Get Sny,” which was previewed earlier this month with the release of the new single “Bonnet of Pins.”

The performances will mark the first chance for British fans to experience songs from this new album, set to be released on May 30 through Concord/Book Records. This will be Berninger’s second solo album, following his debut “Snake Prison” released in 2020.

Visit here to pre-order the new album and here for tickets, which will be available for purchase starting Wednesday (March 26) at 10 a.m.

In addition to the performances, Berninger will participate in several Q&A sessions, including events at the Leeds Brudenell Social Club with Chris Hawkins from BBC Radio 6, the KEF London Gallery with Hugh Stepens, and the Union with Matt Everitt.

Following these April dates, Berninger will embark on a tour across North America, Great Britain, and Europe.

This tour kicks off in North America on May 19 in Seattle, with additional stops in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, and more. The summer leg will feature performances in Dublin, Glasgow, Manchester, and London in August.

The tour will conclude with European dates, including concerts in Antwerp, Paris, Berlin, Oslo, Copenhagen, and various other locations. Click here to purchase tickets for U.S. and EU shows, and here for British dates.

Reflecting on his solo journey back in 2020, Berninger mentioned to NME: “Most of my songs are about love for myself or as a form of self-defense. They manifest feelings for my own soul. I write as if I suspect Karin would want to convey to me. You know: ‘I hope my daughter understands me,’ ‘My mother knows what this is about.’ They represent not just myself; they relate to people who resonate with me.”

In September 2023, Berninger discussed his writing process and mental health interactions with NME again. “I don’t believe in ghosts,” he shared, “but I do believe in the influence of believing in ghosts. It’s similar with God. I might not believe in her, but I acknowledge her power.”

Commenting on the challenges of the pandemic and his time away from touring, Berninger added, “I emerged from a lengthy phase of feeling parched and depressed. I couldn’t write, which spiraled into a panic that I wouldn’t be able to return to it. It was incredibly daunting.”

“I attempted to reset myself physically and mentally. It was eye-opening to recognize my fragility. In hindsight, I was quite unwell. It was a physical manifestation caused by genuine circumstances intertwined with mental ones. It resulted in emotional and physical paralysis. I’ve come to appreciate and respect that fragility resonates within all of us.”

Alongside the new solo album, Berninger is looking forward to new music with The National, sharing with NME his aspirations for an album influenced by punk rock.

“The guys constantly send me rock tracks, but I can’t fabricate it. People can easily identify inauthentic rock; it sounds regrettable and forced. I genuinely need to be in the right mindset to bring that energy. That chemistry is resurfacing, but during my rough phase, I wasn’t angry; I just couldn’t summon energy. There are even songs depicting that feeling.”

“Everything must feel organic to us. God bless. I wouldn’t know how to start if I had to craft a song strategically based on a career arc or similar notions. Whatever happens, I have to write it.”

He also provided updates on his long-in-the-works sitcom with his brother Tom, which he referred to as Das Apes. “Das Apes is alive, and that’s all I can reveal,” he told NME in 2023. “There hasn’t been much progress since the writers met, but we’ll see. I’m not looking to drown in projects like I used to, but this is one I’m genuinely eager to pursue, and it may take off.”
