The Pop-Punk pioneer cracked a joke in his new autobiography Fahrenheit-182, revealing for the first time how he potentially aided the U.S. government in locating Saddam Hussein back in 2003.
Details from the Autobiography
While he previously hinted at the subject on social media, this memoir marks the first instance where he elaborates on the unique plan he devised to help find the Iraqi leader.
In the passage, the musician recounts his conversation with the aircraft carrier’s admiral in the Persian Gulf, discussing inventive strategies for tracking down Hussein.
According to Hoppus, this idea stemmed from a video Hussein released from an undisclosed location, prompting him to suggest that military drones could be utilized to monitor the area.
“Sir, I have a plan for how to catch Saddam Hussein,” he recalls conveying to the admiral. “How about we use drones to fly throughout the region in carpet-like patterns, broadcasting time codes at frequencies above human hearing but within the capability of video capture?”
He continued, “Then, the next time he releases a video, we can analyze it, collect ultrasonic data, and triangulate the drones to track him down.”
Hoppus mentioned that the admiral was “sincerely stunned” by this idea and considered presenting it to military leaders.
“Four months later, Saddam was located and captured in Iraq. So, you’re welcome,” he concluded in his book. He later reminisced about how Blink played in the region after meeting with the admiral, once at a military base in Bahrain and once on an aircraft carrier in Kuwait (source: Loud).
Memorable Anecdotes in the Book
Other notable tales included in the book feature Hoppus recalling an alleged encounter with Robert Smith, discussing his divorce, battling cancer, his friendship with Tom DeLonge, and a “terrible” date with Melissa Joan Hart.
