Insight into the Song

The whimsical single features the pop star, Marina Diamandis, formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, as she sings: “So, I say goodbye, goodbye / watch how I grow”. She emphasizes prioritizing herself and transforming into the person she aspires to be.

“Yes, I am a butterfly / You just never see that I spread my wings / I’m already high / I watch how my life is coming,” she sings in a joyous and danceable chorus.

Directed by Aerin Morino, the music video for “Butterfly” showcases Marina performing the song in various glamorous outfits while dancing around multiple bedrooms. This track marks her first release since the lavish “Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land” in 2022.

Last year, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Marina discussed her upcoming sixth album: “I feel that this next record will be important, and I think that the book of poetry also reflects this. I can take a detour and create something that brings me joy. I reside in a different part of my memory bank. This is how it feels.”

She elaborated: “I wrote for six months. This is still at the beginning. I haven’t begun anything solid yet. Some parts of me desperately want to push things out, while others say: ‘Enjoy this process.’ Because it’s my favorite part: crafting an album and building a world around it. I may not have time right now, but sooner or later, I know it’ll happen.”

Marina’s Past and Future Projects

Marina also spoke about her sixth album last year after opening for Kylie Minogue at her concert BST HYDE PARK. In an interview with Attitude, she mentioned, “I am working on a new record, and I like it. This will definitely come out next year.” Marina even hinted at new music with a tweet that simply stated: “The sixth album.”

She gained recognition in 2009 as “Marina and the Diamonds” and released three LPs under this name: “Family Jewels” (2010), “Electra Heart” (2012), and “Froot” (2015). In 2019, she released her fourth LP, “Love + Fear”, which was her first LP under her own name, followed by “Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land” in 2021.

In 2023, the singer revealed her ongoing health battles and a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Speaking with NME during the release of “Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land,” the artist confirmed that the LP was inspired by political factors and demonstrated her decreased interest in chart success compared to her previous releases.

“We witnessed an explosion of social issues that have been simmering for years. They always existed, but some of us, including myself, were unaware or didn’t fully grasp them… It’s impossible not to let this influence your music,” she expressed.

“(Other artists) might seek that perfect pop hit that could potentially chart or lead to commercial success. For me, I feel like that ship has sailed,” she added. “I’ve had those moments, but as an artist, that’s not what excites me. It’s more about: ‘What am I interested in at that moment, and what do I want to explore in my songs?’”
