Lizzo Declares: “The Lines Were on the Mood Board” for Upcoming Album “Love in Real Life”

New Album Inspiration from Lizzo

Lizzo shed light on her upcoming album, sharing that the inspirations for her work included the group known as The Blows, which she had on her “mood board.”

The artist made these remarks during a New Interview with Zeyna Lowe for Apple Music, revealing that fans can look forward to her fifth album titled “Love in Real Life.” This marks Lizzo’s return to the music scene since her 2022 LP “Special” and is her fifth studio effort.

She announced the album news after dropping the title track last month, along with the unreleased track “Still Bad.”

Discussing how the title track embodies the overall sound of the album, Lizzo mentioned that the Indo-Disco influence came from a particular group.

“The lines were just such a huge inspiration. The lines were on my mood board for ‘Love in Real Life,’” she stated to Lowe. “I wrote a lot since October 2023, and I feel like I hit a turning point at the beginning of 2024 with ‘Love in Real Life.’”

“I wrote this song and thought: ‘Wow, that’s it. Let’s erase everything we’ve done’… Starting with ‘Love in Real Life’ was the track that sparked the creation of the rest,” she continued.

“I always hear stories about how artists discover their sound and define it for their albums or projects. This time, I genuinely felt focused on the sound. It was a simple realization; I said, ‘Wow, I’m one of them now.’ I was thrilled to share this story seven months ago when we found this sound.”

Meaning Behind the Title

Later in the interview, Lizzo elaborated on how she came up with the album’s title, realizing that genuine friendships in real life hold more value compared to those formed through social media.

“I think that real life is the only place where love exists,” she expressed. “I previously mistook the validation I received from social media as love. There were times when I didn’t seek out my closest friends and instead fell into isolation during challenging periods in my life. The Internet felt like the only place where I was seen and appreciated.”

“When that safe space became toxic and destructive, it also harmed my self-esteem,” she added. “I spent the last two years learning that the validation from online praise doesn’t compare to the true love experienced in the real world.”

These reflections came after Lizzo broke her silence regarding a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against her in 2023. She stated she “did nothing wrong” in response to accusations made by three former dancers about a hostile work environment during her tour. Lizzo denied the allegations and mentioned that the situation prompted her to reconsider her place in the music industry.

As of now, the official release date for “Love in Real Life” has not been confirmed, but press reports suggest that “this chapter is dedicated to love, life, and Lizzo.”

Lizzo’s previous album, “Special,” received a four-star review from NME, which commented: “Perhaps inevitably, given the vastly positive message of Lizzo’s ‘Special,’ it can come off as a tad silly. Yet, it’s the kind of silliness that’s impossible to resist.” The review highlighted her infectious tracks, like “Birthday Girl,” which eagerly invites listeners to the bar.

“Clearly, Lizzo knows exactly who she is as an artist and what she aims to accomplish: she’s a fierce talent who ensures people feel good.”

Later this month, Lizzo is set to perform at Irving Plaza in New York on Saturday (March 15) and at First Avenue in Minneapolis on Tuesday (March 18). You can visit here to purchase tickets.
