Lizzo and SZA Nearly Formed a Rock Band Named Pussy Lasers

Lizzo’s Rock Group Dream

Lizzo mentioned that she and SZA nearly started a rock band called Pussy Lasers, along with another unnamed artist.

Behind the Scenes of “F2F”

The “Good as Hell” singer shared this story during a Twitch stream on Friday (February 14), where she reminisced about recording SZA’s song “F2F” from her 2022 album.

“We were just always friends, and this is a sacred space for me in this industry. We (had) this short period of time when we simply contacted the studio,” Lizzo shared in the stream. “One specific night, note, we were going to start a rock group called Pussy Lasers. Oh, damn it, she will not be angry if I say this.”

She added: “We were going to start a rock group called Pussy Lasers with an incredible other artist whom I do not know if she even wants to mention, so I’m not going to mention her.”

Later, the singers noted that while “F2F” wouldn’t necessarily become a song for Pussy Lasers, they recognized it had a more acute rock sound under its influence.

“I was like, it’s hard, although… I said: ‘Dude, pull this Pussy Lasers shit,’ and let me tell you what: I sat and watched this girl freestyle the whole fucking song,” Lizzo recalled. “She ate this shit… at the end of this… I said: ‘This is a song.’”

She also mentioned that she recorded a “mockery” for the song. Although it didn’t make the final cut, Lizzo revealed that some of her vocals can still be heard on the album. “I harmonized with her, and this is me. This is a big me,” she said. “I thought about this song all the time.”

Praises for SZA

In another part of the stream, Lizzo praised SZA for her songwriting skills, stating that SZA “writes the most crazy, crazy shit, which you think and feel, but she just finds a way to say this, and she sees it so beautifully according to the gates, on her mouth.”

In other news, Lizzo is currently teasing her upcoming new era, telling fans that she will “really come to the throat” with new music.

This came a day after she seemed to finalize her previous era, which revolved around her fourth studio album “Special”. “This is the end of a special era,” she wrote on Instagram on Thursday (February 13). “This album was my persistent back to society after the heavy 2020 and 2021. I wanted to help people turn on music, turn off the light and feel that they will be in order.”

As for SZA, she will be touring with Kendrick Lamar at the end of this year. The pair recently performed at a massive show during the Super Bowl. This follows the release of “SOS Deluxe: Lana,” the luxurious version of her SOS album from 2022, which arrived in December after nearly a year of speculation about its release.

In a four-star review of the album, NME noted that the confessional singer-songwriter is not just advancing with pronounced traces and emotional outpouring; she is moving toward her next stage. The songs on “Lana” reveal a more apparent emotional and narrative arc. Personal growth is prominent. The record reflects a musical industry in flux, and SZA is also undergoing a transformation.
