Building Tensions Over Super Bowl

Tensions between Wayne and Lamar have escalated following the announcement that Lamar will headline the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans, which is also Lil Wayne’s hometown. Wayne has long aspired to perform at such a significant event, so when it was revealed that the Compton artist would take center stage, controversy ensued, with Nicki Minaj, Birdman, and others criticizing the NFL’s choice.

Lamar recently mentioned Wayne in “Wacced Out Murals,” from his latest album “GNX,” which dropped last month on his own pgLang label. “I used to play ‘Tha Carter III’, I was proud of my Rollie chain. Ironic, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.“—Lamar stated. “Won the Super Bowl and Nas is the only one who congratulated me / All these niggas excited, I’m just glad they show their faces

Wayne’s initial response came via Twitter: “The f*ck am I doing this?!” I’m just relaxing and they still come into my head. Let’s not mistake kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I ask you all. Nobody really wants destruction, not even me, but I will destroy if I’m disturbed. On me. Love.”

However, rumors are circulating that Wayne has penned several diss tracks in retaliation. Snippets of two unreleased songs by A Milli recently emerged on X/Twitter.

One track, currently titled “Stanley Cup”, features Wayne addressing Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime slot and references him in “Wacced Out Murals.” He raps: “You woke up a giant, but your level has increased? / Do the Super Bowl, nigga, I’d rather do the Stanley Cup“—referring to the major event in hockey.

In another track, the Young Money/Cash Money founder disparages Lamar concerning the controversial “Not Like Us” beat, initially aimed at Wayne’s protégé, Drake. The 42-year-old begins: “They can’t be in Weezy/Hall of Fame mode, that’s too easy.

Lil Wayne has yet to confirm the authenticity of these tracks or whether they were leaked. Many users on X/Twitter suspect that both songs may have been created using artificial intelligence, including recent Lamar collaborator J3, who tweeted, “This Lil Wayne diss better be an artificial intelligence.”

In November, Joe Budden suggested that Wayne recorded a diss track against Lamar shortly after the release of “Wacced Out Murals”: “I heard somebody picked up the phone and tried to call and see what the energy was about. I heard Kendrick didn’t respond.”

He added, “If I call you rapper rapper and you don’t answer… Now I’m going to go to the booth. You have until I enter this booth to hit me back. I heard Wayne come into the booth.”

This year, Drake also made headlines with an AI-generated diss track aimed at Lamar. In April, amid his high-profile feud with Lamar, the Toronto artist shared the song “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which featured fake verses from Tupac and Snoop Dogg. He later removed the song from the internet after receiving a legal threat from Tupac’s estate.

Simultaneously, Lamar’s diss track titled “One Shot” gained traction online, also later revealed to be artificially generated by TikTok rapper-producer SyTheRapper.

Earlier this week, Lil Wayne disclosed that he and Lamar discussed Lamar’s upcoming 2025 Super Bowl halftime performance. “He should kill him,” Wayne commented.

Lamar’s album “GNX” was ranked 12th on NME’s list of the 50 best albums of 2024, with its Drake feature “Not Like Us” being recognized as the second-best song of the year.

In other news, comedian Andrew Schultz referred to Lamar as the “Taylor Swift of hip-hop.”
