The singer made these remarks during a recent interview for the cover of Paper magazine, discussing how he believes the biblical themes featured in some of his previous music videos would elicit a much stronger reaction in today’s political atmosphere.

He reminisced about the visuals for his songs “J Christ” and “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” both of which included provocative references to biblical narratives.

For instance, in the latter, the narrative journeys from the Garden of Eden to hell, featuring him dancing on his knees before Satan, ultimately defeating him. Considering how this artistic choice drew criticism from the Christian community, he expressed that he believes backlash would be even more prevalent if he were to showcase it today.

“The world has changed so much since then,” he remarked, “even now, everything that young men are taught aligns with these super conservative beliefs.”

He elaborated on how he thinks these images would incite more chaos, especially if Donald Trump returned to the presidency, noting the increased criticism directed towards the LGBTQ+ community.

“(If I did it today) They would actually try to kill me, as if I’m not joking,” he asserted.

His comments emerged on Friday, coinciding with the release of his second studio album “Dreamboy” via Columbia Records. He kickstarted the campaign at the end of 2024 with the single “Light Again,” followed by “Needy Boy” in November and “HotBox” last month.

“Light Again” featured production from Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk, and he explained, “Dreamboy is not just an album … I am coping with the loss of what was once and fighting for a new world. I’m thrilled to take you on this journey.”
