Larry Tamblin Passes Away

Larry Tamblin, the founder of Stantells and brother of actor Russ Tamblin, passed away at the age of 82.

The news of his death was announced by his nephew, Dennis Tamblin, on Friday (March 21) via a post on Facebook. The family has not yet made further statements regarding the situation.

He wrote: “My Uncle Larry Tamblin passed away today. I have cherished memories of him and his family over the years. He led an extraordinary life. He was part of a band called ‘Standells,’ whose hit ‘Dirty Water’ continues to play whenever the Red Sox or Bruins celebrate a home victory. They also featured in an episode of The Munsters.

Legacy and Career Highlights

Tamblin continued: “A few years ago, Standells performed at the Hotel Congress in Tucson, Arizona, and Larry stayed with me. It was wonderful to hang out and catch up. He was still making music in his later years. We will miss you, Uncle Larry.”

Tamblin, younger brother of Double Indemnity actor Russ Tamblin, was born in Los Angeles on February 5, 1943. The Standells were formed in 1962 alongside guitarist Tony Valentino, bassist Jodie Rich, and drummer Benny King.

In 1966, they recorded their most famous hit, “Dirty Water,” which continues to be played after every home victory for the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. The song reached a peak position of 11 on the Billboard charts.

Final Years and Recognition

In addition to appearances on the 1965 The Munsters, The Bing Crosby Show, and Ben Casey, the Standells also featured in low-budget films such as Get Yourself a College Girl (1964) and Riot on Sunset Strip (1967).

After a long hiatus to pursue a solo career, the band reunited in 2009, featuring bassist John Flem, guitarist Paul Daun, and drummer Greg Bernham.

They released their final album in 2013. That same year, former drummer Dick Dodd passed away at the age of 68 after battling cancer.

In December 2023, Larry Tamblin was inducted into the California Musician’s Hall of Fame.
