Announcement of the End of Touring

In September, REO Speedwagon declared that they were “heartbroken” but would cease touring by year-end, concluding the cherished rock band due to “irreconcilable differences” between frontman Kevin Cronin and bassist Bruce Hall.

In a recent conversation with Billboard, Cronin discussed the current state of REO Speedwagon and his solo debut scheduled for January 25: “Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this. I didn’t want to finish REO Speedwagon. It’s sad and I would do everything in my power to continue as REO Speedwagon. I never left the group; I will never leave the group. I just got out-voted and… at the end of this year I have to stop calling it REO Speedwagon.”

A Partnership at Crossroads

For clarity, REO Speedwagon’s ownership is held by three band members: Cronin, the lone remaining founding member Neil Doughty, and longtime bassist Bruce Hall. Hall has been absent from the road since November 2023 following back surgery, while Doughty retired from touring last year. The vote to disband REO Speedwagon passed with Doughty and Hall outvoting Cronin by a 2-to-1 margin.

Cronin further elaborated to Billboard: “Simple answer: REO Speedwagon is currently a three-person partnership… and I have one vote. So if I get voted out, I’ll have to accept it whether I like it or not. I’ll be honest with you—I don’t like it. But I have to accept it… I would do everything in my power to continue with REO Speedwagon, but when the vote is taken, you will have to live with the results.”

Cronin will launch his solo career in January and intends to maintain REO’s current touring lineup of Matt Bissonnette, Dave Amato, Brian Hitt, and Derek Hilland, though under a different name.

Cronin also indicated that he might consider having Hall join the band for select performances, but views Hall’s return as a permanent member “as an option” is not viable.

REO Speedwagon’s final show is set to occur on December 21st at the Venetian in Las Vegas. In addition to the concert on December 21, they will perform at the same venue on December 18 and 20. Remaining tickets can be purchased here.
