Film Concept and Details
According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneuder, John Vic star will feature in a film styled as a comedy that revolves around the rivalry between Weezer and Dogstar, complete with their own band.
The report suggests that the film will blend elements of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. It will also include appearances by Juliette Lewis, Eric Andre, Johnny Knoxville, and Ben Schwartz, along with the band members themselves. Henry Jost and Ariel Shulman, known for their work in the Paranormal Activity franchise, will direct the film.
Historical Context and Band Updates
The first Weezer concert was held by Dogstar at Raji’s in Los Angeles back in 1992. The two bands reunited at the Lodge in March last year for a performance, and the film is expected to draw on the real-life history between these two alternative rock groups from the ’90s.
Dogstar was a regular presence in the ’90s, releasing several albums influenced by grunge. After taking a hiatus, they made a comeback in 2023 with the album “Somewhere Between Power Lines and Palm Trees.”
During their appearance at Coachella Weekend One, Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo mentioned that they were working on the film, though the premise remains challenging to pin down.
In unrelated news, Gillian Schrainer, wife of bassist Scott, was apprehended in Los Angeles earlier this month after she allegedly fired a gunshot that did not threaten an officer. In a complicated situation, it was reported that Schrainer shot at a suspect and then pointed the weapon at police, refusing to lower it. She has been charged with attempted murder and was later released on a $1 million bail.
Meanwhile, Weezer is set to embark on a tour in the UK and Europe at the end of this year. Tickets are available here (UK/Ireland) and here (Europe).
As for Reeves, Soft Play extended a bold invitation to the actor to join them during their Coachella Weekend performance for their song “John Wick”, stating that it would be a “dream come true” if he performed with them on stage.
