Opportunity for Fans
This new survey offers fans and live music enthusiasts a platform to voice their opinions and assist in shaping decisions made by the government, the music industry, and city regions across the UK regarding support for live music.
A 15-minute survey is currently available and can be completed here. Major entities participating include Manchester United, the Mayor of London, the Liverpool city region, the combined authorities of West Midlands, Tees Valley, Belfast City Council, and the musical city of Glasgow. The survey aims to “give fans their seat at the table.”
Nash, who recently initiated her Butts for Tour Buses campaign to advocate for the music industry and raise funds for her UK and European tours, expressed her support for the survey, stating: “The invisible thread that exists between each other and the artist is the closest thing to Magic, which I once felt.”
“They are often in place before we are, they wave and watch how we leave, when we go to the next, and usually they are the first people who ask how they can help you,” she continued. “It is quite obvious that they are an integral part of what we do as artists, and I very passionately feel that music fans are involved in shaping the future of my industry.”
Lambrini Girls’ frontwoman, Fibi Lanny, also expressed her support, stating: “Artists rely more on fans than fans of artists. This connection is everything. Tours can feel isolating—long stays in hotels, endless travel, and time away from loved ones. The show provides a small window of connection.”
“Meeting fans, hearing their stories, and exchanging values creates a sense of community that is often lacking. We owe our fans not only our growth but also their support, which keeps me sane. That level of connection is something you cannot buy in this transactional music industry.”
Shirley Manson also joined the call for fans to complete the survey, stating, “When Kate Nash calls for a survey to help analyze how we can restructure the live music industry, everyone would be wise to listen. Kate is doing the work that international governments are failing to do, leaving working musicians without the necessary support.”
Importance of Live Music
Support for this survey has also come from the film and television industry. Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho) stated: “Music is an integral part of my life; not just work and play, but the heartbeat that sustains me. Live music flows through our communities, touching all aspects of our lives, inspiring and connecting us.”
“As a director and a fan, I cannot imagine my life without live music. This survey is a crucial opportunity for fans to take a data-driven seat at the table, and it is essential that we fill it out so our voices can influence the future spaces we cherish.”
Actor Danny Dyer remarked: “We live in a time of division, but this is the moment for people to unite. We need you to take this survey—click the link. This is important; the data matters. It compels people to listen. Let’s reclaim live music, which is deeply rooted in our souls.”
The survey comes as the UK government has recently supported ticket collection at arena concerts to help smaller venues facing precarious situations, with artists struggling more than ever to make ends meet.
A deadline has now been established for the music industry to meaningfully respond to these challenges before government intervention becomes necessary.
“You don’t achieve massive success without small innovations and creativity,” stated the Minister of Creative Industry, Sir Chris Bryant, earlier. NME reported. “We are the first government to clearly express support for voluntary collection. If we don’t see progress soon, we will take action, which could lead to legislative measures that would take time, so I’m hoping for a voluntary agreement.”
“There’s nothing better than seeing a major show in an arena that you first experienced in a small venue. Without small venues, we will never have the British success stories that the industry relies on.”
In a previous interview with NME, Nash shared: “We need government help, and we need it now. Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport, has been speaking with Live Nation and discussing music in Parliament. Last month, she warned the music industry: ‘If you don’t take action, we will be forced to intervene.’”
“It’s not just about live music; she also needs support for recorded music, and I believe Lisa Nandy could become a key figure in the music industry for decades. She has the chance to be a hero.”
