Julian Lennon On The Beatles
Julian Lennon acknowledged that he is not included in The Beatles’ “inner circle”.
Insights From Recent Interviews
In a recent interview, John Lennon’s eldest son shared that he often learns about developments related to his late father’s former band late. When asked about the renewed interest in The Beatles following the documentaries by Peter Jackson and Martin Scorsese, he told Guardian: “Half the time it’s news to me. I am not part of the inner circle – and never have been. You have to understand that when Dad left when I was between three and five years old (it was a bit of a process), it was just Mom and I, and we had nothing to do with The Beatles or Dad.
“I visited him once, but we were mostly free. I’m grateful that Sean (Lennon) and I get on like a house on fire – we’re best friends and he tells me everything he can, but on the Beatles front it’s pretty secretive.”
He further expressed: “I would rather be excited and impressed by what they have done and continue to do. As a fan, I’m as curious as anyone, although I do wonder: How is it possible that there’s another Beatles movie?
Reflections On “Hey Jude”
In the past, Lennon has mentioned that the song “Hey Jude” “drove him to the wall.” Written by Paul McCartney, the classic 1968 non-album single was inspired by John Lennon’s breakup with Julian’s mother, Cynthia.
The couple separated, leading John to start a relationship with Yoko Ono, whom he married in 1969.
“Paul wrote this to comfort my mother and also to comfort me. It’s a great feeling, there’s no doubt about it, and I’m very grateful for it, but it also drove me crazy,” Julian reflected.
“I love the fact that he wrote a song about me and for mom, but depending on what side of the bed you wake up on and where you hear it, it can be either good or a little annoying. But deep down I can’t say a single bad word about it.”
Elsewhere, he has previously commented on his relationship with brother Sean, dismissing rumors of a feud between them as “such nonsense”.
Most recently, he revealed that he underwent emergency surgery after being diagnosed with skin cancer.
Meanwhile, work is ongoing for Sam Mendes’ upcoming four Beatles biopics. Ridley Scott recently confirmed that Paul Mescal will portray Paul McCartney, while Harris Dickinson is expected to play John Lennon, Barry Keoghan will take on the role of Ringo Starr, and Charlie Rowe will play George Harrison.
