Unexpected Holiday Special
The holiday special aired last night (December 15), and the hour-long segment of the show was unexpectedly released on Apple platforms.
Taking over from James Corden, Zane Lowe assumed the role of guest driver and part-time backup singer as he drove the three artists around Missouri, Tokyo, and Los Angeles while Rohan and Lipa performed Christmas classics alongside their own hits.
The “Good Luck, Babe” singer tackled Wham’s “Last Christmas,” a song she recently performed with Sabrina Carpenter on A Pointless Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter, while Lipa delivered a rendition of “Sleigh Ride” by the Ronettes.
Staying true to her character, Gaga opted to sing the original, humorously telling Lowe that she preferred “a song that the whole family can get together and sing” before launching into 2008’s “Christmas Tree,” where she sings: Under the mistletoe everyone knows that we will take our clothes off.
Throughout the performance, Gaga shared insights about her “crazy” collaboration with Bruno Mars and her forthcoming album “LG7.” In a surprise moment, Lowe astonished her by picking up AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, prompting Gaga to recall a time when she was an extra in one of their music videos as a teenager.
Lipa also fondly remembered her teenage years while Christmas shopping with Lowe in Tokyo, recounting a time she went on stage during a Katy Perry concert to perform a Whitney Houston cover with fellow audience members. “I thought, ‘I want to be on that stage,’” she expressed. “I want to perform. I want to make rooms like this.”
After realizing her dream of headlining Glastonbury this year, her track “Training Season” was recognized as one of NME‘s “Best Songs of 2024,” ranking at #42: “Stunning disco-pop backed by a pulsating, infectious beat.”
In a similar vein, Rohan reflected on her upbringing in Missouri, expressing gratitude for her roots, despite calling her upbringing “pretty religious.” She stated, “I know for a lot of people it’s a… very liberating indeed. For me, it’s almost the opposite: I felt like I couldn’t be myself, that who I was was a sin and I was going to hell no matter how good a person I was or how much I loved God for it that I was gay.”
Her breakthrough track “Good Luck, Babe” was recently recognized as one of NME‘s “Best Songs of 2024,” achieving number one: “There are hits, and then there are career-making hits. Released in April, this standalone single catapulted Chappelle Roan into supernova and turned her debut album, The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, into a belated success.”
The special wrapped up with Lowe joining Gaga on guitar for a cover of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” which will be released independently as an audio track.
