Johnny Matis has confirmed that he will be stepping away from performing as soon as he completes his current schedule for the show, citing “age and memory issues” as the reason for his decision.

The legendary artist, who is nearing his 90th birthday, has performed throughout the year, but his last show is scheduled for May 18 in Englewood, New Jersey, due to his health challenges.
This news was announced on the singer’s Facebook page. “It is with deep regret that we share that due to Matis’ age and the memory issues that have intensified, we are announcing his departure from touring and live performances,” the statement read.
“Johnny Matis and his team extend their heartfelt thanks to all the fans around the world for their unwavering love and support of his music! It truly has been ‘wonderful, wonderful.’

All shows scheduled after May 18 have been canceled, and ticket holders will receive refunds.

Matis concludes a remarkable career that has spanned seven decades, starting with his debut album in 1956. He has achieved gold certification for ten of his albums, each selling over 500,000 copies, and overall, he has sold more than 360 million records worldwide, according to National Museum of African American History and Culture.
His most famous collection, Greatest Hits, previously held the record for the longest-charting album, remaining in the top charts for an impressive 490 weeks from its 1958 release until 1968.
While he is celebrated as a legendary standard singer and one of the best-selling artists of the 20th century, his rendition of “When a Child is Born” is instantly recognizable, even to those less familiar with Matis’ work.
Matis has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times and has also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
