In an interview with Marin Independent Journal, Baez shared her thoughts on Barbaro’s image of herself in the renowned biographical film about Bob Dylan. Baez expressed her admiration for Barbaro’s depiction: “I liked what she did in the film.”

She added: “If I did not think she had portrayed it well, I probably wouldn’t have liked it at all. But she resembled me enough and captured my gestures. You could tell who it was. She worked incredibly hard. Kudos to her for taking on the role.”

Joan Baez also reflected on her relationship with Dylan, humorously noting that their romance was only briefly portrayed in the film: “It was pleasantly brief.” She recounted her granddaughter’s reaction to seeing their story on screen: “She said, ‘I do not want to see my grandmother in that film.’

In the 2023 documentary, Baez called her affair with Dylan “completely demoralizing,” stating that although she has forgiven him, they are no longer in contact.

Regarding the film, NME awarded it four stars, remarking: “There are so many performances in Full Unknown that fizz with intense, exciting energy – whether it’s Dylan and Baez arguing through ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ or his managing to articulate the city’s anxiety over the threat of nuclear Armageddon in a Cold War protest song.”

“The most crucial (and often challenging) aspect of any music film is to authentically capture the music. And this film does that. If you’re new to Bob Dylan, you’ll leave the cinema eager to explore his extensive catalog. If you’re already a fan, you’ll spend the next few weeks crafting playlists of lesser-known B-sides or delving into aspects of the scene you weren’t aware of. That’s why making this film was a wild, yet brilliant idea.”

NME has released a special printed magazine dedicated to the film and Dylan’s legacy. The 26-page one-shot is now available; find out where to get it here.
