Jay-Z Consults Prosecutor’s Lawyer After “Misunderstanding Key Facts” in Rape Case

Jay-Z’s Legal Battle

Jay-Z has taken action against Jane Dow’s lawyers, who have accused him of raping a 13-year-old girl.

The lawsuit against the rapper, whose real name is Sean Carter, was filed in December by a woman alleging that Jay-Z and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sexually assaulted her at the VMA party in 2000, when she was just 13 years old.

In response, he issued a statement through Roc Nation, categorically denying all accusations and labeling them as “disgusting in nature.” He further described the allegations as an “attempt at blackmail” by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Anthony Buzby.

Combs has persistently denied all accusations against him, including this one, and is currently incarcerated on charges related to sexual trafficking.

Legal Developments and Defense Arguments

According to Hiphopdx, Carter has submitted a document with additional arguments to dismiss the lawsuit. Earlier this month, the rapper filed a motion to dismiss the case and requested a monetary sanction against Buzby, asserting that he did not conduct a thorough investigation of the woman’s accusations before initiating the lawsuit.

In the filing, Carter’s attorney, Alex Spiro, asserted that Buzby “understood the main facts” concerning the plaintiff’s complaint. Spiro mentioned that the father of the accuser stated she did not recall her version of events, including the estimated 10-hour journey from Rochester to New York for the VMA party in 2000, where she claims the alleged assault occurred.

“Mr. Carter seeks only to hold Buzby to the ethical standards applicable to any responsible attorney who would solemnly sign his name to court accusations,” Spiro contended, adding that the accuser’s legal counsel should be sanctioned for failing to substantiate the claims or for intentionally presenting false statements.

Previously, Spiro referred to an interview given by the woman to NBC News last year, in which she backed her allegations, although she admitted there were “some mistakes” regarding the names of witnesses involved.

A legal team for Carter further argued the implausibility of the accusations, insisting that “the fact that nearly every detail in the plaintiff’s narrative, from her arrival at the VMA to her encounter with the driver and celebrities to her journey with her father, is either false or highly improbable, raises significant doubts about the plaintiff’s claim that Mr. Carter assaulted her, which he did not” (reported by The Guardian).

The Claim Investigation

The new memorandum submitted by Spiro also addressed several points raised in Buzby’s recent claims filed on January 22, which respond to Spiro’s motion to strike the lawsuit.

Buzby claimed that he had investigated the woman’s story before filing the lawsuit and had “conducted an audit of the plaintiff and retained a retired police detective to research and confirm other aspects of the plaintiff’s testimony.”

In rebuttal, Spiro stated: “None of these individuals have even been named, let alone presented as witnesses. The opposing party also fails to specify which “aspects” of the plaintiff’s complaints were “verified by facts.”

In a statement to Hiphopdx, Buzby remarked: “With each outrageous claim from the defense in this case, the situation becomes increasingly desperate. The law applies equally to everyone, including those who mistakenly believe they are above it. No one is above the law. The “main fact,” which is clear to everyone, is that the defendant’s application is frivolous.”

Additionally, in December, Judge Anaysa Torres ruled that Jane Dow would be permitted to maintain her anonymity in the case after Jay-Z attempted to reveal her identity.

The judge cited the “weight of factors,” including the “extremely sensitive and highly personal” nature of the allegations, when making her decision, stating that it “favors allowing the plaintiff to remain anonymous, at least at this stage of the trial.”

Earlier, Carter’s legal team had sued Buzby for extortion and defamation, with the latter calling the statement “clearly frivolous” and asserting it would be “dismissed.” In a statement, Katya Stone declared: “I never said a word about him. This is just another attempt to intimidate and coerce me. It simply won’t work.”
