Withdrawal of Lawsuit
The woman who alleged she was subjected to sexual violence at the age of 13 by Jay-Z and Sean “Didi” Combs in 2000 has voluntarily withdrawn her lawsuit, according to a court document filed on Friday (February 14).
The lawsuit was initially filed in December by Jane Dow, who claimed she experienced sexual violence by both artists at a VMA party.
An anonymous prosecutor later submitted documents to Katya Stone, informing the court that she was withdrawing her complaint with prejudice, meaning she cannot refile it.
Response from Artists and Legal Teams
Combs’ lawyers, who were previously arrested and charged with crimes including sex trafficking and racketeering last September, stated that there was no settlement between the parties. Combs has consistently denied all allegations against him.
Jay-Z, whose real name is Sean Carter, has repeatedly rejected what he called “disgusting” accusations after Dow specified her claims in a corrected complaint in December. He previously criticized his accuser’s lawyer for “getting the facts wrong.”
Last month, Carter submitted additional arguments to dismiss the claim and previously filed a motion for its dismissal. His lawyers also sought monetary sanctions against Texas lawyer Tony Buzby, who represented Jane Dow, alleging he failed to adequately investigate her claims before filing the lawsuit.
Buzby declined to comment on the dismissal for Katya Stone.
In a statement to NME today, Carter referred to the news as a “victory.” He stated, “These baseless, fictional, and horrible accusations have been rejected. This civil lawsuit had no merit and was going nowhere. The absurd tale they concocted was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims. I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone.”
He further expressed, “The trauma that my wife, my children, my loved ones, and I endured can never be dismissed. This lawyer 1-800 may hide behind Jane Dow, and when they realize their attempts to seize money will fail, they’ll walk away without consequences. The system has failed us.”
Carter emphasized, “The courts must protect victims, but they also have an ethical responsibility to safeguard the innocent from baseless prosecutions. Let the truth be known for all victims and those wrongfully accused alike.”
Carter’s attorney, Alex Spiro, also issued a statement following the dismissal of the case, asserting, “It was incorrect for the case against Jay-Z, which should have never been filed, to be dismissed with prejudice.”
“In the face of disgusting and false accusations, Jay did what few could,” he continued. “He never settled, he never paid a single red cent; he won and cleared his name.”
Previously, Spiro referenced an interview the woman conducted with NBC News last year, where she stood by her claims, although she admitted to “some mistakes” regarding the names of the witnesses.
A team of Carter’s lawyers indicated that they found her claims implausible, stating that “the fact that nearly every aspect of the plaintiff’s narrative, from her arrival at the VMA to her interactions with the limousine driver and celebrities, down to her trip with her father, is turning out to be false or highly unlikely, raises significant doubts about the plaintiff’s assertion that Mr. Carter raped her, which he did not do” (via The Guardian).
Combs’ lawyers also celebrated the news, similarly referring to Buzby as “lawyer 1-800,” stating, “Within a few months, we saw the case brought by individuals hidden behind anonymous media headlines rather than legal merits. Just like this claim, others will crumble because they lack truth.”
Meanwhile, at the start of this month, reports indicated that Didi is facing more than 10 new civil lawsuits, according to an attorney representing several of his alleged victims.
Prior to this, he was accused of threatening to eat the flesh of a participant from his 2000s music competition, Making the Band.
