Hayley Kiyoko to Direct and Co-Write Screenplay for “Girls Like Girls” Film Adaptation

Hayley Kiyoko’s Feature Film Announcement

Hayley Kiyoko has revealed her plans to direct and co-write her debut feature film, Girls Like Girls, with Focus Features.

The film, which takes its name from Kiyoko’s 2015 single and 2023 novel, will be produced by Marc Platt, known for his work on “Wicked.” The screenplay is co-written by Kiyoko and Stephanie Scott, who starred in the music video for the original song.

Empowering Queer Content

“Ever since I released Girls Like Girls in 2015, I made a vow to myself and to all of you to do everything in my power to create empowering queer content on the largest scale possible,” Kiyoko shares. “The road map was never clear; I just kept believing that if I kept trying, one day the road might be paved. We did it. It’s here.”

Commenting on her novel, Kiyoko describes it as “a love letter to everyone who doesn’t believe they deserve love in return or that they can have a happy ending.”

“From a song to a music video to a book to a feature film. WE DID IT,” she adds. “We will continue to create space and ignite hope. I am thankful to all the collaborators and friends who have supported me since the creation of this music video and beyond.”

Kiyoko is set to release her second novel, Where There’s Room For Us, in 2025. Her recently released album, “Panorama,” dropped in 2022, followed by the singles “Greenlight” and “Somewhere Between Sand and Stardust” in 2023.
