Canadian musician Claire Bucher, known as Grimes, gave an interview to Time, discussing her relationship with fans, where she pointed out Reddit users as a significant source of negativity.

“Just Reddit. Everyone else is fine,” she mentioned. “Honestly, the more they receive, the more I’ll have a stream of music. So I suppose everything’s in order, but I would definitely appreciate a less toxic atmosphere among my fan base.”

Pressure to Create New Music

She also noted that this toxicity can increase pressure to produce new music. “This is where I feel rushed to create: they only relax when there’s new music,” she said. “I just need to provide them with a bit of art.”

Grimes clarified that most fans “usually come from a good place,” adding, “I really believe that social media amplifies worries about other people being malicious. Overall, I think most people are good, and probably only about 10% are truly evil.”

In a recent request, Grimes asked individuals to stop sharing images of her four-year-old son online after he appeared in the White House with his father, Elon Musk.

“I would really appreciate it if people would stop posting pictures of my child everywhere. Consent is crucial,” she stated. “I know things may be as they are, but I’d truly value this request. I can only ask, so I am asking.”

Raising Awareness About Fan Conduct

Recently, she criticized her former partner in response to a viral moment when Donald Trump praised their child during a meeting. “This is X, and he’s a remarkable boy,” Trump remarked, referencing their son. Grimes responded with concern, saying, “He shouldn’t be in public like this. I didn’t see it, thanks for the heads-up. But I’m glad he’s polite. Sigh.”

Grimes is not the only female artist to address the toxicity of fan interactions in recent times. Chappell Roan shared her thoughts about the “predatory behavior” of certain so-called “superfans,” stating the need to “draw lines and set boundaries.”

Roan’s sentiments received support from several other artists, including Paramore’s Hayley Williams, who deemed her reflections “bold” and “unfortunately necessary.” Juel also shared her own alarming experiences with harassment in the industry, while Muna condemned the “terrible” behavior they faced, emphasizing the need to speak out.

As for Grimes, she recently released two previously unheard tracks: “I’m Not Fucking, I’m Crazy” and “The Fool,” and featured in a video for Adele’s “Girl of the Girl.” Her last album was “Miss Anthropocene,” released in 2020.
