James May’s Surprise Appearance
Former-Top Gear presenter James May was spotted “performing together” at Paul McCartney’s final concert of the year last night (December 19).
McCartney’s Star-Studded Show
McCartney wrapped up the Got Back 2024 tour at The O2 in London with a show that included many surprises, including appearances by Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr and the Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood.
But Starr and Wood weren’t the only famous faces: fans spotted May singing McCartney’s biggest hits from the VIP box.
The Top Gear presenter was briefly shown on the arena’s big screen, nodding as a brass band played directly in front of his seat. Watch the moment below.

Elsewhere in the show, McCartney introduced “Get Back” by discussing his old bass guitar that was stolen over 50 years ago before it was finally returned to him in early February this year. Waving it on stage, he mentioned it was the bass’s first time on stage since its disappearance: “I haven’t played it in 50 years.”
He then gave another surprise, telling the crowd: “And what’s more, we have a special guest for you. Rolling Stone. Ronnie Wood.” When Wood took the stage, they both launched into “Get Back,” footage of which you can see below.
Once the song ended, the two shared a quick hug before McCartney raised Wood’s hand and said, “Thank you, Ronald.”
A Night to Remember
Beatles fans were delighted when, during the encore, McCartney announced another surprise: “Bring out the mighty, one and only Mr. Ringo Starr on stage.”
McCartney joked as Starr made his entrance, “Should we rock? Put on your kit, la.” They then performed two classic Beatles songs: “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club (Reprise)” and “Helter Skelter.”

After they finished the songs, Starr commented, “Give it up. I’m leaving now, but I had a great night. Playing with my old friend is fantastic, but there comes a time when it’s time for us to go home. All that remains to be said, see you next time.”
Before he joined Macca on stage, the Beatles drummer was seen in the audience’s VIP area, watching the show alongside excited fans who photographed and filmed the legend nearby.

During his performance, McCartney explored his extensive discography, performing solo hits alongside numerous Beatles and Wings songs. The set list featured classic tracks such as “Hey Jude,” “Wonderful Christmastime,” “Let It Be,” “In Spite of Danger,” “Letting Go,” and more.
McCartney also performed last year’s Beatles track “Now And Then,” which he stated earlier on the tour struck a “very emotional chord” with him.
“Now And Then” was nominated for both Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance at the 67th Grammy Awards.
Teasing the project for months, Starr described it as “wonderful” and mentioned that working on the track was “like John Lennon coming back.”
“Now And Then” was created from one of John Lennon’s demo tapes and was completed with the help of artificial intelligence, which was used to extract the late musician’s vocals, allowing Macca and Starr to collaborate with them.
