Insights on the Collaboration

In January, the musician released her third studio album “Eusexua,” which has been well received by critics. It features “Children’s things” in its track list, a collaboration with her 11-year-old daughter North West, daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

North delivers a verse in Japanese on the track, and Twigs discussed the decision to collaborate with her in a video shared on Instagram.

“While I was working on ‘Eusexua’ in the studio with Lewis (Roberts, aka Korel) and my friends, they started playing a bass line, and suddenly a song just came to me,” she said. “It entered my head out of nowhere.”

She revealed that while she was at the microphone recording, the words of the first verse flowed out. “They were: ‘Did you just do that?’ And I was like, no; this is a song I wrote when I was a child.”

Twigs elaborated that she has always been a fan of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, a theme that also resonates in the song’s lyrics. The song she created as a child was inspired by her dreams of becoming a star and surrounding herself with “eccentric, large thinkers.”

During the development of the song, her label suggested incorporating a feature. “Honestly, it needs that children’s energy,” she affirmed, agreeing with her label’s perspective. “You need that resilience and strong worldview that comes from being 11.”

“Then I saw an interview with North West,” she continued in the video. “She was so self-assured. I wasn’t as sure of myself when I was a child. I was very shy and afraid of the dark; I felt different from the other kids at school. It struck me that I would have loved to have a friend like North who could stand up for herself.”

She expressed admiration for North’s maturity during the interview. “I thought, well, she should definitely add her perspective to the song. So she came in and wrote about her beliefs, which I think is really powerful.”

Twigs noted that the feature is ultimately about a child with a “strong and unwavering belief system.” She believes this aligns with the themes of “Eusexua,” particularly the message “Dear what you believe in.”

“It was amazing; it felt so joyful,” she said. “And if you think about it, it’s a wild coincidence: I wrote a song when I was 12 or 13, and she wrote one when she was just 11. When I penned my song, North hadn’t been born yet, and when she wrote hers, I was already 36. So we collaborated across time. This collaboration took decades to come to life.”

“It’s such a meta experience, and it’s truly beautiful. This is what I love about music, art, and creation—things can take decades, and you don’t always understand why you felt the urge to write: ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ when you were 13, but I believe in omens, and I believe North played a role in birthing this song after so many years.”

NME awarded “Eusexua” five stars, stating: “Twigs adeptly demonstrates how the fusion of music, movement, thought, soul, and body can be transformed into sound, weaving these elements into a cohesive and transcendent artistic experience. She brings an unwavering sense of creativity and spirituality and melds it with her talent for materializing the intangible. As the album’s closing track says, You only have one life to live, so do it free. What better message to leave behind?”

Twigs is currently on tour in Europe, with a performance in London tonight (March 21) and upcoming shows in Chicago, Toronto, New York, and San Francisco in the following days and weeks. See the full list of dates and get ticket information here.
