It was previously confirmed today that The best gun and Batman is forever star died of pneumonia at the age of 65. He passed away on Tuesday (April 1), having been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, although he later made a full recovery.

Memorable Roles and Iconic Moments

The Hollywood star was beloved for his distinctive portrayals of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s Doors and the charismatic detective in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

One of his most esoteric performances came towards the end of his career in the video for Oneohtrix Point Never’s “Animals” in 2016. The track, from the producer’s seventh album, features Kilmer in a dimly lit environment, gazing intently at the camera.

The emergence of Kilmer in this video followed his absence from the public eye after his cancer diagnosis.

Within hours of the announcement, tributes poured in from Hollywood contemporaries and friends of Kilmer. In a statement to Hollywood Reporter, director Michael Mann said: “Working with Val in Heat, I always admired his range and brilliant variability in embodying the character. After so many years of battling Val’s illnesses and his unwavering spirit, this news is incredibly heartbreaking.”

Kilmer fans shared numerous stories, recounting interactions between Kilmer and Bob Dylan, as well as a time when he “tickled” Lou Reed.

Stephen Merchant also recalled his time working with Kilmer in an episode of Life is Too Short, where he attempted to convince Kilmer’s character to finance a sequel to the 1988 film Willow.

“Despite his intense reputation, Val Kilmer was a joy to work with on Life is Too Short. He was always ready to be playful and self-deprecating,” Merchant reflected on Wednesday (April 2). “Truly irreplaceable. Rest in peace, Val.”
