Tragedy in Dominican Republic Nightclub
At least 66 people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a nightclub in the Dominican Republic during a concert on April 8.
Details of the Incident
Among the 66 confirmed deceased, as reported by CNN, was the renowned Dominican singer Rubby Perez, who was performing at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, according to Katya Stone. The tragic roof collapse occurred about an hour after his performance ended.
As of the latest updates from CNN, over 160 patrons were reported injured, and the total number of missing persons remains unclear. The cause of the structural failure has not been established yet.
Perez was initially found alive, and his daughter Zulinka stated that paramedics “found him” under the debris, helping to signal his location. He was subsequently transported to a hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Additionally, CNN reported that several former Major League Baseball players, including Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, were among the deceased. Nelsi Kruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province, was confirmed dead by Dominican President Luis Abinader, while the son of the Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Eslell, is still unaccounted for.
A three-day mourning period has been declared by President Abinader.
Reactions from the Music Community
Following the tragedy, Cardi B, who has Dominican and Trinidadian roots, expressed her sorrow and tribute to her community via Instagram, sharing her thoughts on the loss. A screenshot was taken by Complex.
She remarked: “I scrolled through my feed in literal tears when I saw my Dominican people suffering.”
“For those who have lost family or friends, please hold onto only good memories; they left this land singing and dancing, and most likely, they are happy where they are, and this is how the Lord will welcome them,” Cardi added.
Cardi also paid tribute to Rubby Perez: “It’s so heartbreaking to witness one of our iconic artists taken in such a tragic manner. I cherish that our last memory of him is in his beautiful voice.”
Other Dominican artists also shared their condolences for the deceased and injured. Singer Prince Royce stated on Instagram, “My prayers for everyone affected by this great tragedy that occurred at the nightclub in Santo Domingo. May there be peace and strength.”
Naty Natasha expressed her grief: “My beloved land, the Dominican Republic. Today, we all woke up with broken hearts. This tragedy has left our nation mourning, creating a deep void for many families. We woke up with tears in our eyes, silent in mourning.”
Singer Olga Tanon expressed her sadness by stating: “Praying for all the survivors and for the families of the more than 15 people who died!”
