Experience the Debut of the New Musical Road Surface

A Glimpse Into The Musical

A tasting clip providing a backstage look at the musical of the sidewalk Incline! Fascinated! has recently been shared with fans—take a look below.

Overview Of The Film

Following us by show Sidewalks, an unconventional film that blends elements of a biographical film, a documentary, and more. The team behind the film has shared new footage of the Jukebox musical that was included.

The film was initially announced in 2022 by director Alex Ross Perry, who also directed Incline! Charm!. According to New York, the project is inspired by a confounding directive from the leader of the asphalt, Steven Malkmus.

While the team wanted a film, Malkmus was inclined to hire a screenwriter rather than a documentary maker, preferring to avoid a script altogether. The recent clip features Perry’s insights along with contributions from choreographer and music director Angela Trimbur, and actors Michael Esper, Katherine Gallagher, and Zoya Lister-Jones, who have brought the challenge of the sidewalk to a new format.

NME awarded the film four stars, with writer Matthew Turner stating: “Stranded shots (some scripted, some not quite) often showcase Kiri preparing for his role as Malkmus and becoming a bit obsessed, whether it’s perfectly recreating photographs from the 1990s or aiming to replicate iconic films.”

“In summary, this is an exciting creative musical documentary that serves as a heartfelt summer cottage and a playful sense of joy that Perry experiences behind the camera—both significant and contagious.”

In a conversation with NME in 2022, the team reflected on their revival after “Harness Your Hopes” went viral on TikTok.

Malkmus explained: “It was a strange event when your music goes viral; it can happen,” to which guitarist Scott Cannberg added: “Yes, it took it in a different direction, which is surprising.”

Malkmus continued, “It was a peculiar cultural phenomenon, but by placing yourself out there, you have the opportunity to happen, even if you feel insecure or think your music isn’t good. You keep going, and then the world sees you. There’s a funny part in some form of art, particularly ours.”

He mentioned to NME: “I regretted that I didn’t place it on the album since no one said: ‘This is a great song’ or anything like that.” Cannberg replied: “I’m sure I did!”

Pavement embarked on a massive reunion tour in 2022, including shows in the UK, Ireland, and Europe—marking their first concert launch in 12 years, kicking off with Primavera Sound Barcelona and Porto.
