Event Highlights
The event took place in the Royal Festival Hall on Friday, January 31, as part of Mississippi Goddam: Nina Simone’s Holiday. The Nu Civilization Orchestra celebrated the legacy of the legendary artist with special invited singers, directed by conductor Peter Edwards. The occasion was particularly poignant, being held at the site of Simone’s legendary concert in 1999, just before her passing in 2003.
Taking the microphone were the nominated performers Laura Mvula and Corinn Bailey Rae, along with neo-jazz star and others. The ensemble displayed their vocal range, often harmonizing while showcasing the different facets of Simone’s personality, ultimately capturing her powerful spirit of rebellion and zest for life.
