Entertainment Industry Responds to Donald Trump’s ‘Two-Gender’ Policy: ‘The Right to Be Our True Selves is Essential’

Trump’s Gender Policy Announcement

President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will officially recognize only two genders: male and female. Below, you can see the reactions from various celebrities regarding this policy.

On January 20, Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States for a second term. During his inaugural speech, he stated: “From this day forward, it will be the official policy of the Government of the United States that there are only two sexes: male and female.”

Although Trump seemed to mix up the terms “sex” and “gender,” his administration later clarified that an executive order would be signed to recognize only two genders—male and female. It would further assert that these cannot be altered, and federal employers must use the term “sex” instead of “gender”.

After Trump’s proclamation, she posted an update on Instagram Stories that reads: “Let’s be very clear: Gay and transgender people were here before Donald Trump and will continue to be here after his death. Whether you want us to exist is secondary to the simple fact that we exist. The sun doesn’t care if you sign a decree prohibiting it from rising every morning. It just keeps shining.”

Aurora, who identifies as bisexual, took to Instagram Stories to support her transgender followers: “To all my (transgender) friends, colleagues, and all the wonderful members of the trans community in the United States whom you have not yet had the pleasure of meeting: I am deeply saddened by the way your own government has failed you.”

Aurora further expressed: “The right to be seen and heard is crucial. The right to be who we really are is essential. My heart is with you, and my growing anxiety about the world’s direction reflects my concern. Fear of the unknown and fear of what is different is not innate; it is learned.”

“I hope we will again recognize the power of love and the strength of the people. May our humble pleas to live freely—true to who we are and how we wish to lead our lives—never cease,” Aurora concluded.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Judge Michelle Visage shared a portion of Trump’s speech on Instagram Stories, noting: “YOU WILL NOT ERASE MY CHILD.”

Other Drag Race stars, including Niecy Nash and Cynthia Lee Fontaine, reacted to GLAAD’s update on Trump’s announcement. Nash shared a “wow” gif, while Fontaine remarked, “Trash. But we will continue to ensure that our rights are respected. We will NOT be silent.”

Rapper Lil Tay and actor-singer Kevin McHale highlighted inaccuracies in Trump’s use of “gender,” clarifying that it should refer to “sex” instead.

Conversely, some celebrities, like Russell Brand, are in favor of Trump’s policy change.

The new order will prevent workplace obligations requiring transgender individuals to use pronouns matching their gender. It will also challenge diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and cease federal funding for them.

According to NBC, the Gender order aims to “(protect) women from the extremism of gender ideology and restore biological truth to the federal government.”

The order mandates that the federal government utilize the term “sex” instead of “gender” and instructs the State Department and Homeland Security to “ensure that official government documents, including passports and visas, accurately reflect gender.”

Starting in 2022, the Biden administration will allow Americans to select a gender-neutral “X” option on their passports.
