Elton John has cautioned that the cuts to the USAID budget proposed by Donald Trump could have “destructive consequences” for the global HIV response.

The US President announced on Thursday (February 27) that his administration plans to eliminate more than 90 percent of the USAID budget related to foreign assistance contracts, which amounts to $60 billion (48 billion pounds) in global spending for US aid efforts.

Impact on HIV Response

In an Instagram message posted on Saturday (March 1), John, whose Elton John Aids Foundation is one of the leading independent charities in the fight against AIDS/HIV, stated that such a “sharp solution” could have a “destructive impact on the HIV response.”
