Super Bowl Stage: Sheeran’s Perspective

During his appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, which you can watch below, Sheeran was asked if he had ever been invited to perform at the iconic halftime show. He responded that he was approached about ten years ago to collaborate with another artist, but he feels he lacks the necessary “pizzazz” for the stage.

He explained: “There was a conversation about 10 years ago to collaborate with someone, and I think that would have been the only way I would do it at the moment. I don’t think that English artists are similar—there are some who have the full show with fire, dancers, and all that—but I go there, and it feels like here is a ‘team,’ and here is ‘perfect.’ No one wants to see that.”

“Considering if there were a show with plenty of production, for instance, if it were a Beyoncé show and she had all the bells and whistles, and then there was a moment when we sang perfectly, that makes sense to me. But I don’t know. I can’t imagine myself doing it. Can you imagine how I would do it?”

New Single and Upcoming Album

Sheeran mentioned that while he believes he could perform one song, he doesn’t think his tracks would fit well into the show’s format. “The catalog that I have doesn’t really lend itself,” he added. “Have you seen how I perform? My setup involves loop pedals, and it takes time to build things. The Super Bowl isn’t suited for saying, ‘Hey, hold on, guys. I just need to set this up for two minutes.’”

This year, the Super Bowl show featured Kendrick Lamar, and shortly after his performance, it was announced that it had become the most popular halftime show in history, with Lamar making history as the first solo rapper to headline the event.

In other news, last week (April 4), Sheeran released a brand new single titled “Azizam.” This upbeat track serves as the first sneak peek of his forthcoming album, the details of which will soon be revealed. The name ‘Azizam’ is derived from a Persian term of endearment, translating to “my dear” or “my beloved.”

“Azizam” came about during a studio session with Swedish/Iranian producer Ilya Salmanzade, known for his work with Ariana Grande, Charlie XCX, and Sam Smith. The two quickly discovered shared influences between Persian and Irish folk music, and how they could weave these elements into a pop context.

“Azizam/ meet me tonight/ show me how to move, how water/ between dancing lights/ be mine, be mine/ aziza The artist sings on this vibrant, rhythmic single.

“Even though this is completely different from anything I’ve done before, I feel it embodies ‘Azizam.’ I aimed to create a party atmosphere in the song, and Ilya was instrumental in bringing that vision to life. He was incredibly inspiring to work with.”

In social media posts , Sheeran shared: “I wrote ‘Azizam’ after (Salmanzade) suggested experimenting with music inspired by his Persian heritage and culture. I enjoy exploring music and different cultures as I travel and communicate with people. It felt like opening a door to an entirely new and exciting world.”

He added, “I loved how many rhythms, weights, melodies, and instruments differed, yet they resembled the Irish folk music I grew up with. It showed me that music connects us all and is truly a universal language.”

Sheeran described the upcoming album as “playful, exploratory, and festive.” He extended his thanks to his co-producers and co-writers on “Azizam,” including Sava Kotech and Johnny McDaid from Snow Patrol.

He also confirmed that he completed the new album last month. He recently debuted a new song titled “Old Phone” during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and in an interview, he teased the titles of his next five studio records, including plans for a posthumous album.

Last week, the artist surprised fans with a pop-up performance in London’s Kings Cross and even covered a song by Challe Roan while performing anonymously in the New York subway.

In other news, it’s been revealed that Sheeran will perform an intimate set at Coachella 2025.
