Details About the Announcement
This news came after the language learning app recently shared information regarding its latest marketing campaign, which confirmed that its talisman, a green owl named Duet, has unexpectedly died.
Last night (February 11), the app shared the update stating, “With heavy hearts, we must inform you that the duet, officially known as Duolingo OWL, is dead.”
“Currently, the authorities are investigating the cause of death, and we are fully cooperating,” the statement continued, while also addressing accusations from users that they were not engaging enough with the app. “To be honest, he probably died waiting for you to complete your lesson, but what can we say?”
“We understand that he had many adversaries, but we kindly ask you to refrain from sharing your reasons for disliking him in the comments. If you feel inclined to contribute, please enable your credit card information so that we can automatically enroll you in Duolingo Max in his memory,” it concluded while referencing the pop star. “We appreciate your respect for Dua Lipa’s privacy during this time.”

The mention of the hitmaker comes as the app has often alluded to her, particularly due to the similarity between her name and the concept of “duet.” This has included several references in her social media posts over the years, and the singer even mentioned a special connection with the talisman during a recent interview (through Time).
In light of the news about his passing, Lipa took to Twitter to honor Duo. Sharing a post from Duolingo’s official account, she added the caption: “Til ‘Duo Duo,” along with a broken heart emoji.
Duolingo also released a statement to E! regarding the new direction of their campaign, which stated: “For many years, he tirelessly reminded millions of his language lessons – sometimes with gentle nudges, occasionally with pure, determined persistence.
“Yet, even the most dedicated birds have their limits. Our app icon will now reflect this tragic loss with a ‘dead duet.’ An investigation is ongoing, and we cannot comment further at this time.”
The spokesperson also assured that the story of the “Owl” talisman isn’t over, as they will work on “revealing the shocking (and possibly absurd) truth behind its untimely demise.”

In other news concerning Dua Lipa, last December, the singer reflected on her set at Glastonbury 2024, stating that she “captured as many mental snapshots as (she) could during the performance.”
In a four-star review of Lipa’s performance at Glastonbury 2024, NME described the set as a “power performance to silence critics.”
It added: “I don’t want this moment to slip away,” she remarked, gazing at the crowd in front of her, “I won’t take this for granted.” The audience also felt the same, as the night turned out to be not only a brilliant pop spectacle but also a reminder that even the wildest dreams can become a reality.”
