Drug War, Vampire Weekend, Mick Fleetwood, and More Pay Tribute to the Grateful Dead at Charity Gala Concert

Celebrating the Grateful Dead

“War with drugs”, “Vampire weekend”, Mick Fleetwood, and others honored the Grateful Dead in a charitable celebration in Los Angeles.

Musicares Persons of the Year Ceremony

On Friday (January 31), the Musicares Persons of the Year ceremony took place at the conference center in Los Angeles. This annual gala concert paid tribute to icons such as Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Dolly Parton.

The Grateful Dead became the third group to receive this honor, following Fleetwood Mac and Aerosmith. Surviving members Mickey Hart and Bob Weir were present to accept the tribute.

The tribute featured performances of The Dead’s classic “Box of Rain” from the 1970s, with Vampire Weekend covering “Scarlet Begonias” from 1974. Other highlights included Billy Strings performing “Wharf Rat”, Dwight Yoakam covering “Truckin’”, Sammy Hagar with “Loose Lucy”, My Morning Jacket playing “Another Saturday Night”, and Norah Jones covering “Ripple” during the event.

The gala was initially announced in October and was originally meant to include a posthumous tribute to Grateful Dead founder Jerry Garcia. However, following the death of founding bassist Phil Lesh shortly after the announcement at the age of 85, he was also remembered during the ceremony.
