Drake’s Look-Alike Contest Prize
Drake awarded $10,000 CAD to the winner of a look-alike contest in Toronto – details below.
Event Overview
On Saturday (December 14), Canadian bakery Casuals Cakery in Toronto held a competition to find the best Drake impersonator in the city. Initially, the main prize was supposed to be a bottle of Hennessy and a pack of cigars.
However, Drake found out about the competition and sent Casuals Cakery a private message on Instagram, saying that he would nominate “10 bands” for the competition “as the grand prize.” The exchange was posted on Instagram via Casuals Cakery, who responded to Drake: “Just give me a minute to stop hyperventilating this moment… I can't believe this is your account and you know it, oh my god I love you.”
Ultimately, no contestant won the look-alike competition – instead, a group of contestants were declared winners together and would likely have to split the prize money.
Recent Competitions and Events
Drake did not attend the Toronto event, but shared clips from the event on now-expired Instagram Stories.
The event marks the latest celebrity look-alike competition to take place in recent months. The look-alike competition craze began in October when the Timothée Chalamet Lookalike Competition was held in Washington Square Park in midtown Manhattan. Chalamet was a surprise attendee at the event and has since offered to pay the police fine incurred by the organizer for holding it without permission and attracting around 900 people to attend.
Since then, look-alike competitions have been held for the likes of Glen Powell, Paul Mescal, Zendaya, and many others. Powell announced a competition in his honor, promising the winner a cameo role in one of his future films.
Drake has spent much of the year feuding with Kendrick Lamar, who surprise-released his new album “GNX” last month. Over the course of their feud, the two rappers released several diss songs aimed at each other, with some of their diss songs going down within days and even hours of the other’s diss.
Drake also recently filed two lawsuits against Universal Music Group regarding “Not Like Us.” The first dispute, filed in New York, alleges that UMG “artificially inflated” the number of streams of “Not Like Us” and used undisclosed “pay-to-play” schemes.
The second dispute, filed in Texas, alleges defamation, claiming that UMG “knowingly” approved the release of “Not Like Us” despite lyrics from Kendrick Lamar’s songs that assert Drake is a “pedophile.”
Kendrick Lamar’s team has not yet responded to NME attempting to get a comment. Meanwhile, UMG stated of both allegations: “The suggestion that UMG would do anything to undermine the credibility of any of its artists is offensive and untrue. We apply the highest ethical standards in our marketing and advertising campaigns. No amount of flimsy and absurd legal arguments in this preliminary statement will be able to disguise the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear.”
