The New Agreement with Netflix

The insistence of the Prince and Netflix has resulted in a new “mutual agreement” and the cancellation of the long-awaited documentary about the late musical legend.

Collaboration Details

Today (February 7), the Prince’s estate took to social media to announce its new partnership with Netflix, which will enable the development of a new documentary featuring exclusive content from the Prince’s archive.

The estate also confirmed the cancellation of the Edelman Ezra documentary for Netflix, which had been in development for more than four years. However, no further details were provided about the new documentary slated for Netflix.

Edelman is best known for his work on OJ: Made in America. He spent the past four years developing the film after replacing Ava Duvernay, gaining extensive access to Prince’s archives.

Last July, however, it was reported that Edelman’s project was “blocked” and “dead in the water” due to multiple disputes with the Prince estate. The estate claimed that the initial draft of the Netflix film was rife with “dramatic” factual inaccuracies and featured “sensational” visualizations of certain events from his life, according to Variety.

The contract for the documentary also specified a six-hour series, yet Edelman reportedly delivered nine hours, which was noted as a breach of the agreement.

Prince passed away from a fentanyl overdose in 2016. Without a will, his six heirs were left to inherit equal parts of his estate, leading to an extended legal battle over the future management of his assets.
