DJO is a project within the Synth-Pop genre, led by the artist Joe Kiri, who creatively manipulates his vocals and challengingly distorts modern stereotypes often seen online.
In a press release, Joe stated: “This is a kind of shot for anyone who is trying to keep up with what is happening.” The music video accompanying the song features a group of individuals having lunch before standing up and departing. At the end of the clip, Kiri comes into view.

“Basicbeing Basic” represents the first fresh material following the release of the musician’s previous album “Decide” in 2022, which included his viral hit “End of Beginning.”
The third album of DJO, “The Crux,” is slated for release on April 4 under the AWAL label and is available for pre-order. Here. The album is a collaboration between Kiri and his longtime collaborator Adam Teyn and was recorded at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York. “The Crux” showcases opulent guitars and instrumentation reminiscent of late 60s and 70s pop music, marking a departure from Kiri’s previous synth-pop albums, “Twenty Twenty” (2019) and “Decide” (2022).
As mentioned in the press release, “The Crux” “begins with reflection on the breakdown of relationships leading to self-reclamation, along with a celebration of the importance of community education.”
DJO tracklist for “The Crux”:
1. “Loneliness is a state of mind”
2. “Basicbeing Basic”
3. “Link”

Previously, Joe discussed his hit “End of Beginning” in the NME series “In a Conversation.” “In fact, it’s about the time when I was just over twenty, living in Chicago while attending college, graduating, and playing in several bands. I was involved in the music scene (although I also waited tables and listened to commercials…) I think we are addressing the period when I was on the brink of significant changes in my life, yet I was so eager to live my future that I perhaps didn’t realize what a special time it was,” he explained.
He further noted: “So, in many ways, this is a song about nostalgia – you know, regarding another version of myself. However, it is also a kind of self-assertion – try to evaluate your present (and understand that) your past will always be with you and define who you are.”
In the same interview, Kiri elaborated on how his admiration for Charli XCX and the Chicago DIY scenes have significantly influenced his sound.
