Devin Townsend Announces Indefinite Tour Hiatus: “Let’s Achieve This Goal”

Devin Townsend Announces Tour Pause

Devin Townsend has shared that he will be pausing his tour in the near future.

The Canadian metal musician is currently on a North American tour, but after his final show in Los Angeles on May 23, he will not be performing live for an indefinite period. “However,” he emphasized, “this is not a retirement, as I’m not done playing live by a long shot.”

Reasons Behind the Break

Townsend explained that his decision stems from both personal circumstances and the rising costs of touring.

“For almost 35 years, I have followed a creative path led by instinct—every album, every tour, every project has felt like a new chapter in my story that I needed to tell. My mind records these concepts, and I enjoy pursuing them. This chase has made the journey wild, unpredictable, and profoundly fulfilling,” he stated.

“Over the years, I’ve often been told, ‘Devin, take a break … please.’ But the flow of ideas, the excitement, and the support from incredible musicians and listeners have kept me going and made touring a joy for me.”

“However, everything has changed, especially since the pandemic. Planning a tour now means booking up to two years ahead. With fewer venues, a smaller number of crews, and a packed touring schedule, it has become more complicated than aligning things in the past.”

“On top of the logistics, life has also caught up with me: my parents need assistance, my dogs are aging, and my children have moved away. ‘The moth is nearly done,’ and honestly, I need some time to breathe and recalibrate. Thus, I’ve decided to take an indefinite break from touring.”

He added, “This upcoming North American tour will be the last time you see me on stage for the foreseeable future. This doesn’t mean I’m done playing live—far from it. I’ll keep performing until my last breath. But right now, I need to be there for the people who matter to me and give myself space to reflect on everything I’ve experienced.”

“Tours have been a beautiful, exhausting constant in my life, and this time I’m heeding the voice that says, ‘Slow down.’ I want to create from a place of calm inspiration, not frantic obligation.

“So, here’s the deal: this final North American tour will be something special. We’ll dig deep into the catalog, pull out some big tracks, and make these shows a real celebration. If you’ve ever wanted to experience the world I’ve built, you might have caught a ‘moth’ or found a song that resonated with you when you needed it—now is the time.”

“I understand that times are financially tough, and I don’t take this lightly, so I’ll do everything I can to make these shows as meaningful and memorable as possible. Let’s make it count. With love and gratitude, Devin.”

Townsend is currently on tour to support his new album, “Powernerd,” which was released in October.
