The Canadian DJ and producer, whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, has entered into a significant agreement with the “Create Music Group” for his recorded music catalog, which spans over 4000 tracks, for an impressive 55 million US dollars.
Details of the Deal
According to Billboard Pro, the deal encompasses the publishing and master recording rights for the catalog of 4000 songs, along with his Mau5Trap label. Furthermore, it includes rights to future releases from Deadmau5 and the label.
Jonathan Strauss, co-founder and CEO of Create Music Group, stated to Billboard: “Now, as the stewards of Deadmau5 and the legendary Mau5Trap catalog, we are inheriting a legacy that has forever changed music. Joel’s influence extends far beyond sound—his artistry connects music, games, and technology, inspiring a new generation to think creatively. This is more than an acquisition; it is a responsibility.”
The transaction is also expected to lead to new projects from the Create Music Group based on Deadmau5’s discography, although further details have yet to be revealed.
Industry Trends
Deadmau5 is among the latest prominent musicians to sell their music catalogs. Recently, it was reported that Red Hot Chili Peppers aimed to sell their recorded music catalog for 350 million US dollars. Sources suggest they may have already reached a deal with Warner for their masters catalog, though this has yet to be confirmed.
They join the ranks of other legendary artists like Pink Floyd, Queen, KISS, and Tame Impala. In October, Pink Floyd sold their catalog to Sony for 400 million dollars, while Kevin Parker of Tame Impala sold his entire catalog to Sony for an undisclosed amount. Similarly, KISS sold their entire catalog along with their brand and likeness to a Swedish investment firm for an undisclosed sum. Currently, the most expensive catalog in music history belongs to Queen, which sold to Sony last June for a staggering 1.27 billion dollars, marking the largest acquisition of its kind.
