Green Day made headlines on Saturday (April 12) when frontman Billy Joe Armstrong altered the lyrics to their iconic song “Jesus of Suburbia.”

Instead of singing the original lyrics, “Get away from pain when you became victims,” Armstrong chose to sing: “Run away from pain like children from Palestine.

Draiman’s Response on Social Media

David Draiman took to X/Twitter to express his views. As a Jewish individual, he extended an “open proposal” to Armstrong, stating: “You know, I respect you, brother.”

He continued: “I would like to be able to hear the Israeli/Jewish side of this terrible war. I am ready to discuss when you are. There is no judgment, nothing biased. Let me know.”

Draiman has been a vocal supporter of Israel; last year, he referred to Roger Waters as a “monster” and “anti-Semitic” due to his outspoken views and stated in 2022 that he would not back down from expressing his pro-Israel stance.

He also opposed Elon Musk’s threat to sue the Anti-Defamation League, an organization that campaigns against anti-Semitism, which Musk claimed “falsely accused him of being an anti-Semite.”

In response, Draiman remarked, “I think that all this was reactionary, and, for obvious reasons, given the damage caused by the platform you bought. Let’s talk. One on one to discuss problems and clear the air. You choose the environment.”

Green Day’s Political Commentary Through Music

Green Day has made several lyrical adjustments to address various political events throughout their career. Recently, they took a jab at U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance during a concert in Melbourne, changing the lyrics from “I’m backward or I’m just glad?” to “I’m backward or I’m just J.D. Vance?

They also made headlines during their New Year’s performance in 2023 for altering the lyrics to their 2004 classic “American Idiot,” replacing the line “I am not part of the agenda” with “I am not part of the agenda of the magician“.

Armstrong voiced his reaction to Trump’s victory in 2016, calling it “something radical to remove him from the office.” He stated: “I am damn about Donald Trump. He is not my president, he does not represent the largest half of the country, he does not even represent the people who voted for him.” He emphasized the need for change among working-class individuals who feel abandoned.

In other news, a fraudulent firework exploded in the crowd during Green Day’s Coachella 2025 set.
