Unfortunate Accident for Darren Hayes
Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes has suffered a severe head injury, which he received recently, and stated that he “could die” from it.
The vocalist from the Australian pop duo of the 90s mentioned that the accident took place on March 17 in Santa Monica, California, after he lost consciousness shortly after waking up in the morning.
In a post on Instagram dated April 18, Hayes expressed that the incident occurred just two months after his mother passed away. “I tried to keep this private, but my lengthy recovery means it’s easier to confront the truth,” he wrote.
Details of the Incident
Explaining the circumstances, he said, “I lost consciousness shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed three times, losing consciousness each time. The force of the injury was so intense that the blanket of my head broke my left jaw. I woke up in a pool of blood, experiencing excruciating pain in the left side of my head and 9 teeth.”
Recovery Process and Future Steps
Hayes expressed gratitude towards the staff at St. John’s Providence in Santa Monica, stating: “I could have died if I had landed in a different position. They scanned me for heart issues and neurological problems. I was scheduled for emergency reconstructive surgery, which took place on March 21.”
He noted that the surgeons inserted a titanium plate to reconnect his jaw bones, and his mouth will remain closed for eight weeks.
“Before the fall, I had experienced light-headedness and fainting spells for a certain period. I am incredibly concerned. I have a remarkable cardiologist and an oral surgeon, and we are working to determine the cause of my fainting. So far, my heart is normal, my arteries are fine, and I do not have a brain tumor or anything that could have caused the accident,” he elaborated.
He shared his hopes for recovery and expressed appreciation to his fans: “I love you all. I am so grateful to be alive, and every day I am getting stronger. Now that I’m almost a month post-operation, I’m just beginning to feel better, and I am thankful for my loved ones and the doctors and nurses who took care of me. There were moments of deep sadness.”
Hayes formed Savage Garden in 1993 alongside guitarist and keyboardist Daniel Jones, and they are best known for hits such as “Truly Madly Deeply,” “I Want You,” and “I Knew I Loved You.” The duo parted ways in 2001, after which Hayes pursued a solo career.
In 2022, Hayes reflected on the reasons behind the group’s split: “I really supported (Jones) and loved the band. He absolutely hated the fame experience and decided before the release of our second album that he didn’t want this life.”
