City Council’s Decision on the Venue

The frontman of Cradle of Filth, Filt, stated that Sheeran intended to purchase an empty venue and transform it into a musical space; however, the Ipswich city council’s decision was influenced by noise concerns.

Discussing this on Kerrang! In the podcast of the conversation, Filt expressed his bewilderment over the council’s decision, especially given Sheeran’s connection to Ipswich.

“I don’t understand the Ipswich city council at all, because my friend, Ed Sheeran, told me he wants to buy this venue,” he explained. “It has been vacant for years, and he made an offer to turn it into a musical place. It’s perfect—ample parking and located at the main ring interchange in Suffolk. It couldn’t be more ideal. This is right where you enter Ipswich.”

“And yet, the Ipswich city council claimed it would generate too much noise. I mean, having Ed Sheeran involved with the Ipswich city council is like cheese with Cretaceous—it doesn’t make sense. He has murals around the city and even sponsored the Ipswich Town football kit. The people of the city support him. But no.”

Collaboration with Ed Sheeran

Filt and Sheeran hinted at a collaboration back in 2021, but it has yet to materialize. In January, Filt mentioned on Podkast Downbeat that their collaboration was “made and covered.”

“We did it two years ago,” he explained (through The Metal Sucks). “It was unusual because we’d planned it for about a year and a half.”

Filt added, “I think our managers communicated with each other. His manager, Stewart, was acquainted with the Coal Chamber group, which is managed by Des Fafar, who manages me.”

Regarding the delay in releasing their single, he mentioned, “We didn’t want to release it initially because we were busy with other projects. Then Ed had a lot going on and couldn’t put it out. So, it will come out when it’s ready. We didn’t want to tie it to an album.”

He continued, “This is a completely new Cradle of Filth song featuring Ed Sheeran, and some of it sounds very much like him. He plays acoustic guitar and sings in his signature style, but there are elements that are distinctly us.”

“There’s an explosion, a scream. Ed really pushes himself in it. He utilizes a rock vocal. This is about self-affirmation. It’s a genuinely good song. Only a few people have heard it so far; even my mom hasn’t listened to it yet.”

Cradle of Filth has just released their new album “The Screaming of the Valkyries” and will be returning to the UK this summer for a slot at the Festival Festival 2025.

Meanwhile, Sheeran recently penned an open letter to the UK government, calling for immediate and long-term funding for music education.

The letter, signed by numerous prominent figures, including Elton John, Coldplay, Harry Styles, Dave, Stormzy, and Robert Plant, urges Keir Starmer to allocate £250 million towards music education.
