Albarn’s Insights on Future Projects
Recently, Albarn spoke with the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles about his new electronic opera, Magic Flute II, La Malédiction, a continuation of Mozart’s Magic Flute.
When asked about his plans for 2025, the Blur frontman remarked: “I am finishing the new Gorillaz album. One opera and one new Gorillaz album seems enough for 2025! If anyone does not blame me for having removed me from gas!”

Fan Reactions and Expectations
Jamie Hughlett, co-founder and artist of Gorillaz, also chimed in on Instagram, seemingly confirming Albarn’s statement: “Yes, the new album comes out this year,” accompanied by a thumbs emoji.
In an interview with the French podcast New Star, Albarn mentioned that the album is supposedly expected to be completed in about six weeks.
Fans quickly took to Reddit to share their excitement and thoughts. “For the first time I see it. I would like another album, so I hope this will happen,” one user commented, while another fan on Instagram wondered, “This potentially means that they can also return to the tour?”
While anticipation for the new Gorillaz album is high, many fans remained concerned about the timeline for its release: “Because they’re hitting a 7-8 year break. Damon continued to say, ‘Deltarun tomorrow.’ There was a huge break between the days of ‘Demon Days’ and ‘Plastic Beach.’”
Another user added, “We already knew that this would happen this year. It just took it from 99% to 100%. Also, don’t take too much stock in ‘finished after 6 weeks’; it doesn’t mean we’ll get new things in 6 weeks (Cracker Island was fully completed in 2022) and released about 8 months later).”

The last release from the group was 2023’s Cracker Island. In a four-star review of the album, NME stated: “Albarn and his team seem unfettered, having grasped the concept, and instead crafted a consistently enjoyable record that explains why they remain relevant in their career. The group, once a peripheral player, is now shaping the present of pop music and inspiring its future. Could the eighth album be much worse than the seventh?”
In other news, last year Blur discussed with NME what the future holds for them, especially following their successful Live at Wembley Stadium concert film and their upcoming set at Coachella 2024.
“We cannot leave it for too long because we’re creating,” said Graham Coxon, referring to the band’s upcoming announcements. “Creatively, we will always find something to do, but it’s important that we live a little life, and I hope not to go through something so traumatic before reuniting.”
