Graham, who joyfully frequented the center in his childhood, shared a video on X/Twitter, encouraging viewers to “express objections to the constant death” of the oasis building.

The Call to Action

The latter part of the video featured Ivo in a jacuzzi, sporting an orange floating cap and a mustache that he grew for a “Nick Cave party”.

He remarked: “As a child, spending my weekends at the leisure center of the oasis, where I would scream on the water slides, was thrilling.

“The future of this location is hanging in the balance this week, and the outlook seems grim; such venues hold significant importance for the community and sports.

“If you value Swindon, water slides, or the essence of your childhood, which is at risk of being sold off for apartment construction, then check out Save Oasis Swindon.”

The building, which features a pool, slides, and a wave machine, first opened its doors in 1976 but has been closed since 2020.

The oasis got its name from the recreation center after Liam Gallagher proposed it instead of the original name “Rain,” having spotted it on a tour post from the Inspiral Carpets.

In 2011, Liam made his debut there with his then band Beady Eye. Two years later, he commented to NME that he deemed the name Oasis to be “shit.” He said, “It was a shitty name, but most band names are shit.”

“Although there was a notable place in the Manchester Arndale called Oasis, which also sold cool clothes, it wasn’t just about the Swindon Oasis recreation center.”

In 2009, Morrissey was taken to the hospital after collapsing during his opening song at the venue.

In a statement reported by Swindon Advertiser, Save Oasis Swindon urged residents to voice their opposition to the proposed demolition of the gym.

They stated: “The multi-purpose room has hosted a wide array of sports, boxing matches, comedy acts, music, and more for nearly 50 years.

The statement continued: “The oasis put Swindon on the map; please help stop it from being transformed into apartments, casting a shadow over its former self.”
