A Legacy of Punk Music
Conflict formed in Eltham, southeast London, in 1981, gaining attention for their lyrics that criticized capitalist society under the conservative regime of Margaret Thatcher.
In the following year, they released their debut EP ‘The House that Man Built via Crass Records and established their own Mortarhate Records label, which produced albums for acts like Hagar the Womb, Icons of Filth, Lost Cherrees, THEE Apostles, and Stalag 17. Their first album, ‘The Ungovernable Force,’ was released in 1983.
Jerwood was a passionate advocate for veganism, animal rights, and anti-capitalism, a commitment that has been recognized in tributes from fans and colleagues alike.
The British organization Unite Against Fascism remarked: “Many anti-fascists will be saddened to learn of Colin Jerwood’s passing from Conflict. His Eltham roots and activism against toxic racism defined his support against fascism for many years.”
Cherry Red Records shared: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Colin Jerwood, the frontman of Conflict. We collaborated with Colin for over 20 years through the Mortarhate label. He was a character—sharp, driven, and always forward-thinking. Colin has left an indelible mark on punk music that will never be forgotten. We will miss him deeply.”

RIP Colin Jerwood. Conflict was my favorite group in the late 80s/early 90s. Mortarhate is also my favorite label. The conflict defined my view of anarcho-punk more than anything else. pic.twitter.com/yvdttorbs2
