Coldplay’s Guy Berryman Reacts Skeptically to Band’s Plan to Limit Their Discography to 12 Albums

Coldplay’s Future Albums

Guy Berryman of Coldplay has addressed the band’s strategy to cap their discography at 12 albums, remarking that he views the plan “with a grain of salt.”

In a conversation with NME back in 2021, frontman Chris Martin disclosed that Coldplay is aiming to unveil their final album in 2025. He later elaborated on his remarks, outlining his intention to conclude the band’s album catalog after 12 releases.

Recently, he provided further insights to NME, explaining that the conclusion of the band’s new music endeavor is on the horizon. “Right now and since about 2008, if something resonates with me as a song or a solid idea and feels genuine, we’ll pursue it. The opinions of others don’t influence us,” he shared, discussing the current state of the group.

“It’s 12 albums, certainly, but we’re going to release a little later,” he stated exclusively to NME during his only written interview about his upcoming album, Moon Music. “There’s one more project – a musical. (This is) album number 11, but its release might be postponed until after album 12 due to the lengthy animation process required for musicals.

“Our concluding single from this album is titled “All My Love.” This is the most recent single. We have a theme song along with an album called Coldplay, which will serve as the final one. I anticipate it will arrive a year later – I’m certain of it.”

“Pursuing 12 albums is genuinely meaningful and invigorating. This doesn’t imply we won’t tour or compile some compilations or unreleased tracks. It simply signifies that the core narrative has been articulated. This feels precisely right. Recognizing that this is occurring validates all the effort we are investing currently.”

In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Guy Berryman discussed Chris Martin’s plan to cap the band’s catalog at 12 albums, noting: “Chris will never stop writing, so I’m treating it with a bit of skepticism.”

He added: “We have plenty of time before we consider retiring. However, I think having a plan is vital. If you’re running a marathon, there’s a clear goal of 26 miles. But if someone said, “Just run and don’t stop,” it becomes challenging to stay motivated.”

Martin also shared with Rolling Stone his desire to honor Coldplay songs created over the years that “didn’t fit into the ‘picture frame’ of any album.”

“Eventually, we will undertake a project termed Alphabetica, comprising numerous snippets and songs that didn’t find a place anywhere. We’ll write a song starting with A and another with B because that’s sufficient—we’re still on the Q song, which is proving to be a challenge,” he joked.

He indicated that their self-titled album, which is set to be their 12th and final LP, will connect to their initial EP, saying, “I’ve envisioned the album cover since 1999. This image was shot by the same photographer who captured the cover of our first EP,” and noted that this record would symbolize a “homecoming” to Coldplay’s original vibe.

In a separate NME interview, Martin expressed how the deadline for releasing 12 albums has infused the members with “greater ambition” and a commitment to ensuring they do not dilute their output. He reassured fans that by the time the 12th album is unveiled, “everything will make sense” within Coldplay’s narrative.

Regarding the band’s direction post their 12th and final album, Martin clarified that the band has no intention of disbanding, but will instead shift focus beyond songwriting.
